Has anyone had any experience shooting there? I've personally never been there, and when I came across the above photo (in our group pool) the description kind of has me a little worried.
Description reads: There's a lake (technically a man-made reservoir) in the Hollywood hills. That crosswalk in the middle is accessible but cameras are prohibited. And believe me, if you try to take a camera, a sheriff's deputy will suddenly appear and sternly remind you of that sign on the gate you went through which said "no cameras" in big letters.

Check out:
www.hollywoodknolls.org/hollywood_reservoir.htm#top Lake Hollywood Reservoir page
Photography is NOT listed as a limitation.
The reverse view of the photograph above is the Hollywood Sign. I have heard that there are motion sensors around the sign that sound a "sheriff on their way to arrest you" recording if you trip a sensor in the area around the sign..

Hey there, Afropix. I'm going to try to hit this. It would be a pleasure to meet you in person.
Fishlamp, that thing about county sheriffs and photography at the lake doesn't add up for a lot of reasons-- the least of which is that the lake is a city-owned LADWP facility.
I've got some time today. I'll swing by and check it out.

It looks like photography is actually prohibited at the lake!

I had just taken the photo of the sign when a pickup truck, driven by a guy dressed like a sheriff (but is actually DWP security) came out of nowhere-- just like the guy said.
He drove by me, did a u-turn, and started driving back in. I asked him if, "cameras are not allowed in there" to which he nodded a yes.
I asked him what the deal is with that, and he said, I kid you not, "after 9/11, everything changed."

Not that this is really important now, but it might be after the event:
I'm planning on shooting exclusively with film (anyone else?) Unfortunately, this means that photos cannot be instantly uploaded for voting. How will that work out? Is everyone going to upload at the same time, or will film be completely separate from digital?

A Chinatown/Olvera Street/Union Station would work for me. You get people in the form of tourists and locals (including folks utilizing Amtrak, Metrolink, and the Red Line at Union Station); a good eye is going to create abstracts almost anywhere; and nature pops up in the form of trees in The Plaza, palms at Union Station (plus flowers in the gardens on either side of the station's main concourse), and succulents in the courtyard of the Avila Adobe, just off Olvera Street.

I'm really starting to look like a killjoy, but there have been problems shooting inside Union Station and the subways. A flickr group was actually formed partially around difficulties with security in the station and on the subway.
The group admins staged a demonstration in the subway and at Union Station, with Sheriff's deputies escorting us, to show the security guards it's legal to shoot there.
But that very day, as soon as the group broke up, at least one member was stopped and questioned by security!
I've personally been lucky in the subway, but Flickr Los Angeles members Cinemafia, Discarted and others have been stopped.
Like I said, it's legal-- but try telling that to the guards.
Discarted (photo below) was the point person on that demonstration. We might want to ask him who to contact if we want to shoot in the stations and trains as a group.
Of course, we don't have to shoot inside Union Station, but that place is really photogenic, with huge windows that make for some beautiful light in there.
Anyplace else on which I can put the kaibosh?

every single time I went (Union Station), I never had anyone tell me to stop shooting. guards watched me, tourists watched me...I shot on the tracks, int the halls, everywhere...no one stopped me. It's been a great place to shoot for me...some of those people in the groups are rebels and kinda seek out trouble. They go looking for a fight...some of them anyways.

Me, too. Never a problem.
But I wouldn't call Cinemafia. Discarted, or this guy (forgot his name) rebels and troublemakers, and they were all stopped early last summer for various reasons.
Well, maybe Discarted. (Just kidding, Shawn)
Also, a couple of months ago in October, I was working on a political commercial, with a production company of about 15 people. We were shooting on a train platform, and I saw the guard assigned by the station to watch us tell someone right in front of me there is no photography allowed. I wanted to ask the guard about it later-- was it for our benefit or what-- but we were moving fast and I never got the chance
Anyway, I just thought you might want to call first. The guards are just making this stuff up as they go, so it might be good to have a name of someone you can mention that said everything was okay. But really, one way or the other, the worst that could happen is they throw the group out.

I don't know the guys you mentioned, and they probably aren't rebels...I'm just saying, I have heard a lot of stuff about people going in there and daring the guards to kick them out...just to prove a point...when all that does it make it harder for those of us who go in peacefully. I doubt your friends were the ones doing that...
and if we call, according to you, it won't matter since the guards make the stuff up as they go along. they could tell us, "well so and so doesn't work here anymore so you don't have permission..."
it's all really how you go in there, isn't it? I guess, if this ends up being a place to shoot for this day, people can choose to go in or stay out, I guess..

Even if the worst happens and we do get kicked out of Union Station, it's not like there's a lack of other locations to shoot in the immediate vicinity. I think it'd be a good place to do a group meet.
Plus, that would give me an excuse to actually ride the train up there for a change.

no tripods allowed at union station unless you sign a wavier at the security office and even then your limited where you can shoot. i was hassled by security while there. to bad this has to happen on the 21st its a day after my bday so i will probably be busy :(

I don't even understand the anti-tripod mentality. What do they gain by limiting their use?
Posted 11 months ago.
(

i understand the anti-tripod rules if its for somewhere like times square where it's absolutely packed with people and tripods could cause people to trip or if several photographers set up tripods it could easily take up a lot of space in an area that already is jam packed. so i'm not sure if for union station they are thinking the same thing with a lot of people walking about with luggage and then have someone set up a tripod that might impede traffic. so i'm guessing safety is their gain.
not to say that i totally agree with them, i just think that there is some reasoning behind them.

I've been jostled by clueless tourists in Times Square often enough that I think I'd be amused by watching one of them trip over a tripod.

Does anyone have any objections to my bringing a model or two? They will not be the focus of the shoot, merely there for us should we like to have a posed person in a specific shot. I have some ideas I want to try with a model in Chinatown and on the train tracks (further away from the station). Let me know...

i don't mind, but i do think that it will end up being the focus of the shoot. not many people have experience shooting models and having a model there, well most if not all will take advantage of that situation and end up shooting the model. most of us have already been to the locations for this shoot and one way to make it different is to incorporate a model into the photos.
Posted 11 months ago.
(

|

so you like the idea or no? hahaha! you start off like you don't like the idea, then you kinda warm up to it...hahaha!
Also, were we all going to go to the same places (stick together as a big group) to shoot on this thing or were we gonna be able to split up?
If we are allowed to split up, then it might work. One group on the tracks, another in the station, another in Chinatown, etc..Like I said, I would only use the model in a few places. The rest of the time I'd be shooting other stuff. Maybe have the model there for like an hour only.
I do not want the model to be the main focus, which is why I would only use her in specific spots--for a short amount of time...and it wouldn't be a glamour thing, definitely not a big production...no lights, no umbrellas, just a good looking person in natural light on the tracks, or on the bridge, or by a building...
but if it'll create a problem or make others uncomfortable, I won't. Just throwin' it out there! I appreciate the feedback!

... to be honest i wasn't too excited at first about going to these locations having been there a number of times, but since the people who really organized this event wanted those locations, i'm quite okay with it now. i guess for me, the model might change things up so i guess i'm for it. i guess if people don't like the idea, then there's no rule saying that we all have to stick together as a group. as long as we check in at the beginning and then maybe at a certain time later on, then everybody is free to go wherever they want at the locations we've decided on.
... i think that will either be decided as we get closer to the date.

I think splitting up and meeting back every now and then would be good, esp. for people who may have to leave early. How long is the event? Some meets went well into the night from what I recall. If that's the case, we can all meet back close to the end of things and review the day, the goal, and the deadlines.
I think this will be a large group that will probably end up getting separated at some point, so smaller groups touring different areas would be one way to make sure someone gets in with some group at one point and that no one is left out.
I'm excited!

Given the projected size of the group and the fact that we're meeting up not just for a photo walk, but to participate in something of a contest, I think it's not only likely, but probably necessary, that the group split up into smaller components (or that some individuals may choose to go it alone periodically). So, I think we should plan a couple of check-in points/times where we can reassmble. For example:
2:15 p.m. -- Disperse from Union Station (if we have a model, those folks interested in shooting her/him could go with Kim). People photographers and architecture enthusiasts may want to focus on the crowds inside the station, folks into floral photography may want to adjourn to the courtyards on either side of the station, etc. Some folks may just want to high-tail it across Alameda over to The Plaza/Olvera Street.
3:30 p.m. -- Regroup at the can't-miss-it band shell in the middle of The Plaza just outside the main entrance to Olvera Street. We could spend a few minutes (or more) chatting or snacking on street food or, well, chimping (and getting photographed by other group members doing so -- it's a tradition!).
3:45 p.m. -- Head north up into Chinatown and its great opportunities for people/street photography, neon signs, restaurants & shops, etc.
5 p.m. (or later) -- Meet back up at Union Station, or outside Philippe the Original, which is just a hop, skip and a jump away from Union Station. Then, folks who want to maybe go eat somewhere can make arrangements for that, and folks who need to get going can do that, too.
That's my .02 -- or, in this instance, $2.00. Heh.
