You said it's a pattern that is a multiple of 8 stitches, +4. So since you want 4 repeats instead of 2, that would be 4x8 plus the extra 4 stitches. 36 all together.

If it is the one that I am thinking of, it is confusing in that you start out with 8 + 4 stitches (total of 12) but on the second row you have a total of 13 stitches with which to work, and you don't go back to just total of 12 until the 12th row. If that made any sense!!

How many repeats do you want to end up with? as in how many stitches wide is the piece you're knitting?

Here's a sample of the traveling vine I've used, from Mon Tricot:
cast on 12 stitches
row one - k2 *yo, k1tbl, yo, sl 1 k1 psso, k5* end with k2 (you will have 13 stitches)
row 2 k2 *p4 p2 tog tbl, p3* k2 (you will be back to 12 stitches)
row 3 k2 *yo, k1 tbl, yo, k2, s1 k1 psso, k3* k2 (you will be back to 13 stitches)
and so on for a total of 12 rows for the pattern
If you want to increase, just multiply 8 stitches by the number of vines you want -- so to make three vines, you would need 28 stitches
2 side stitches, 8 X 3 for the vines, and 2 side stitches
