About Kailash Manasarovar Yatra
On the cradle of the Tibetan plateau, 865 kms. northeast of Delhi and 22,000 feet above sea level, shines the snow-clad silvery summit of Mt. Kailash, the abode of Lord Shiva. To its south, are the pristine glacial lakes of Manasarovar and Rakshas Tal with their crystal clear waters glittering at a height of 15,000 feet. The Holy Manasarovar, believed to have originated from the Manas (mind) of Lord Brahma, stretches majestically into the Tibetan expanse with a circumference of 88 kms. Through a natural canal, it is connected to the equally gorgeous Rakshas Tal, the origin of the river Sutlej, and the site where the demon king Ravana meditated to woo Lord Shiva. Resplendent with spiritual aura, the Kailash Manasarovar region has utmost religious significance in Hindu, Jain and Buddhist cultures.
The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra or KMY group features selected photographs from the pilgrimage to holy Mt. Kailash and Manasarovar. Year after year, people from all over the world visit the holy land of Kailash and Manasarovar in Tibet. The "Yatra" or pilgrimage starts at the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, makes its way up the Himalayan ridge and into Tibet. The yatra from the Indian side is mostly on foot or on ponies. An alternate yatra route is through Nepal, using motor vehicles.
The yatra usually consists of a "parikrama" or a circumambulation of Mt. Kailash, a parikrama of Manasarovar and a visit to Rakshas Tal. Yatris from the Indian route would also get a glimpse of the amazing Om Parvat, the mountain bearing the symbol of ॐ - Om - the Sound of the Universe.
Anyone who visits this region is a "yatri". Whether you have come for spiritual enlightenment, devotion, hiking, photography or simply wandering, you are a yatri.
