information provided by Grom.
Equipment(s) needed:
1. A camera with a built-in intervalometer or
2. A wired remote trigger that has a built-in intervalometer or
3. Courage, dexterity, stamina, concentration and a good stopwatch (and a wireless remote trigger)
4. A sturdy tripod
What is an intervalometer?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intervalometer
Nikon cameras with built-in intervalometers:
D200, D300, D2H, D2HS, D2X, D2XS, D3
Other make cameras with built-in intervalometers:
?
Camera Settings:
For the purpose of the project, I'd suggest the following settings for the time-lapse:
1. We want to make a 30-second video
2. Video will run at a rate of 15 frames per second (fps)
3. So, we will need to capture 450 frames within that one hour slot (30 seconds x 15fps)
4. 450 frames within 60 minutes means that you need to capture one frame every 8-second interval.
So just set the camera to capture one frame at every 8-second interval, for one hour.
Technical Tips:
1. Set the camera to Aperture priority mode, use a small-ish aperture (f8 to f16). You can use manual exposure if the lighting conditions are constant or if you brave.
2. Set the camera's white balance to a fixed setting/temperature. Don't put it on Auto.
3. You can set the photo size to be medium or small since it's gonna be a video in the end. Small resolution photo is adequate.
4. Do not move/touch the camera at all during the capturing process.
5. It is more pleasing to see object 'movement' in the time lapse. This can be done by dragging the shutter (long-ish shutter speed, like 1-3 seconds, to capture movement blur). If you're shooting in daylight, use the smallest aperture (f22 or f45) and you may also need an ND filter on the lens)
6. Try to pick a spot where you can see movement (cars, people), shadows (buildings, trees), the sky (clouds) and changing lighting conditions (sunrise, sunset).

interested to participate? let us know in this thread!
please give us:
- your name and email address
- 3 slot choices (*)
- location / subject proposals
- any additional notes
please note:
- once assigned to your slot(s), you will need to be fully committed to the project.
- no slackers please!
- we will encourage you to go out in pairs/teams to shoot so that you could assist each other, especially for those who lack the equipment.
- although you need to give us your slot choices, it's best that you make sure to be free for at least either day of the project.
- we might just team you up as best we can, to make sure you get to each other's locations on time and so on. (this means that we will not assign you consecutive hours of course).
eg. you might choose slots #01, #03 and #05; but not #01, #02, #03 as you would need time to get to and setup at your different locations.
- participants will be given free passes to klue urbanscapes 2008.
questions welcomed!

hey thasban (and anyone else) - thanks for your interest.
for sure, it should take a bit of time to think about and decide. we do realise that it's a challenge but we also hope that you would think this interesting enough and a great opportunity to take up.
there's already interest from a few members to do this.
at this point, try not to think too much about the technical details and gear issues. for now, your idea(s) should be the most important aspect.
if you're shy about posting them here, feel free to also email me:

no worries for those unable to participate. for those keen to, please do not forget to give us details as required:
- your name and email address (and phone number!)
- 3 slot choices (*) (as listed here)
- location / subject proposals
- any additional notes
list down in this thread or email me (queenfisher@gmail.com)
you must give us up to 3 slot choices and ideas (and must be available for all 3 slots, as you will either be given 1, 2 or 3 slots to do depending on the number of interested participants).
closing date to send in your ideas/proposals is on thursday, 12th june 2008 at 12.00pm.
we will have a mini meet on that thursday evening for a briefing and to confirm slots.
thanks!
btw i would like to encourage night-owls, those with own transportation and those with higher-end gear to take up the night-time slots. it's a great opportunity for you to get creative anyway.
hey luke, just take along your mat salleh to your shoot ;)
and lastly, apart from free passes to urbanscapes, participants will also score *ehem* goodies from our favourite photo-sharing website, so don't miss out! (and we're not talking about just buttons and stickers here ;)

I'll be going down in to KLCC fountain in a min. just wanna try out. see whats the come out later. hehe
Btw, this is more info about time-lapse

hi everyone
sorry i should have emphasised that the current 2nd post in this thread is just one of a few methods. of course this will also work with even point and shoot cams, no worries.
more write-ups will be available soon.
in the meantime just think about your subjects, locations and slots as kabir has done.

Hello everyone, just to emphasize on Shafina's point, if you follow the steps as stated in the 2nd posting, the result will be a smooth, almost video-like time-lapse. However, you can still use camera burst mode or even manually pressing the shutter release (with or without tripod) but the results are more rigid. Depending on what you plan to shoot, it can actually enhance your video.
Here are a couple of examples I did using a point & shoot camera and a low-end DSLR
Camera: Sony Cybershot DSC T100/Handheld (only begining & ending of video is time-lapse.
www.flickr.com/photos/razorline/2553793098/
Camera: Olympus E-300/ 3FPS burst mode/no tripod but used table for balance.

Furthermore, to make things easier for participants who are worried about how to create a proper time-lapse from their still images, I will help out.Once you have done shooting U're respective slots, pass the images to me.& I will create it for you.

4. once a scene is chosen, the camera must be kept static throughout the hour as the shots are made.
5. the number of images shot must be enough to be compiled into a minimum of 30 second video - from as fast as a shot every 5 seconds to a shot every 20 seconds depending on your subject and location.
6. copy all images (jpg files) into a cd. one cd per slot please.
good luck and have fun, everyone!

Additional note:
1. You can use U're camera's lower resolution settings as long as the image resolution is no smaller than 720X576 or 800X600 pixels.
720x576 (TV resolution)
800x600 (computer monitor resolution)
I think most cameras now can shoot at their lowest quality settings and the resolution would still be higher than the minimum required resolution. Using lower res settings would allow you to take more shots per memory card (for those of you who do not have memory cards in abundance).
2. Try not to think too much about the technicalities & focus more on what you all want to portray in U're images ... in the end after all the images are compiled into a time-lapse video it will become more like a short film ... so content should take precedence.
All the best everyone! :-D

thanks to vig for helping me out with all his gear and setting up the shot. thanks to prakash for being there too. these 2 jokers kept cracking me up and masuk frame! can't wait to compile this one into a video.
slot #04 @ rapid kl #88
thought i'd just take the lrt but then had the idea to take the bus route to kota damansara. it lasted just over an hour. didn't shoot at a very good angle though. but it was a pleasent and meditative experience, ehem. i hope my finger was automatically pressing the shutter button while i was in my meditative state hehe.

7.26a.m - Me just got home. Managed to cover both my slots although I'm not very happy with the results. Too much interference, but it was still FUN! :-D Sama la macam Kabir, macam2 soalan keluar. In fact, during my 1st slot between 1.00a.m - 2.00a.m Matt was with me & he got approach by some dude who wants to sell him stolen jewelleries ... U gotta love K.L!
Will be uploading time-lapse of Mizzie & Johan shooting their respective slots soon (sorta like a behind the scenes thing) ... Great work everyone, lets hope the remainding 5 hours will be just as FUN!

thats a great idea :)....i have a few ideas of making a cool time lapse for fellow flickrians. think, i told han about it.
did mine this morning! i got a great angle for my shots but taking from night to daylight is quite challenging as i have no choice but to stick to whatever that was (manually) set.
i hope to get my shots corrected :( but cant wait to see it in vid format!

At the KLCC park, the guards asked me to stop taking pictures using the tripod. I told them my tripod wasn't blocking anyone so I'll leave it standing there . Luckily I had set up the intervalometer so unbeknownst to the guards the camera was quietly doing its job, clicking the shutter every 8 seconds as I sat at the park bench reading a book.
My slot of 5-6pm went well and since the guards didn't disturb me further I extended it to 8pm to capture the Twin Towers as the sun set in the background.
Then it was off to Eye on Malaysia for my 9-10pm slot. No guards to stop me but with so many people around I had to warn them not to accidentally kick the tripod. Then off to Chawan to pass the intervalometer to Matt for his 11-12am slot.
Had a few short session of time lapse today as well. With the intervalometer, it's quite addictive.

well, my slots went well as well"
the first slot from 2pm-3pm on Saturday- I was at Central Market and then I placed my camera in front of a lychee and rambutan stall, the lychee seller was constantly asking " Bang nie abis pukul berapa?" then i replied "1 JAM' and he was like so shocked cuz he was complaining that no one would come and buy and he moved the other side and yet he no buyers....hehehehe
2nd slot was my from 6am-7am on Sunday- went to KLCC park to take the towers and guess what my parents came along and they were strolling around the park...exercise la....
3rd slot was last minute thingy as Shafina called and told the person doing it had a last minute thingy and I decided to do a time lapse at the restaurant I had lunch after church, it was fun as my friends were all so hyper and did funny things in front of the camera....
Overall, this is a good experience for me as it taught me patience in producing good work and overall KLickr gang are so committed to such projects...so keep em coming the projects....

Thanks again everyone who participated in this project. I have recieved all your images & am sorting it out now. Editing will begin tommorow & hopefully I will be able to preview it to all of you by this Friday. I can't load it up online untill after Urbanscapes 2008 so we shall have a mini-meet to see the results. All participants will be given the full-length time-lapse video along with each individual time-lapse clips in hi-res format.
Again, many thanks to all who have made this project possible. :-D

Hello everyone, so far I have only passed one compilation to Mizzi last night, the rest are still with me (15 DVDs in total).
List of participants;
1) Han
2) Shafina
3) Prakash
4) Kabir
5) Prem
6) Kerd
7) Ripi
8) Iskandar
9) Matt
10) Sam
11) Johan
12) Ibah & WoodNocks
