Did it ever occur to him that some people might not want his images all over their city? What a steaming hypocrite!

Quite so Roger!! This is fascinating the idea that while you paint huge murals over a city you should be able to keep control. I thought that once something was in the public domain, there is no going back. Surely that is the difference between Street Art and say, Tracey Emin!
I think it is about 'The Internet' which he does not realise is a public space just like the street.

"i don't really want these images to be on the internet" tough.... hmmmm and today's key words are "street art" "public space" internet and oh yes there is a kidacne website too... get a life and/or get a canvas and a gallery wall...

I would suggest that he should be pleased - we think enough of his art to want to photograph it!
Actually, I'm not sure I'm going to photograph it anymore - the Phelgm guy is very happy for his work to be on Flickr.

I think we all agree. I noticed that Archipelago Gallery on Ecclesall Road has a Kid Acne exhibition on. Perhaps this is driving the privatisation of his work.

Thats soooo funny! tho I can kinda understand where he is coming from!
He probably feers for about poor representations of his work.
But surely he understands that it could help?
Most of the pics I've seen are of great quality and there is only a minority of ones which aren't represented in the right way!

Fair comment, but if his images are in a public place then there's not a lot he can do to stop them being photographed, just as any person in a public place has no automatic right to privacy.
TT, did you speak to him directly, or is the quote lifted from somewhere else?

Sorry Dan only just noticed this. The quote is taken from an email he sent me.

I think the comment is pretty fair and it's respectable if he doesn't like his artwork on the internet because of poor representations. Maybe he wants people to see them in person and get the full experience so you can appreciate the artwork more as they look better in person.
Theres not a lot he can really do about it though in the age of digital cameras everywhere. His artwork gets a lot of attention when u see it in Sheffield and if people really like it they might take a pic. It is street art and it is in public space so why shouldn't people take a picture? My view personally is that I'd be really happy and flattered to to have a group that takes pics of my works. I have big respect for the guy, but i don't see sense in his comment when his art is everywhere on the streets of Sheff.

Oh come on Kid Acne! It shows that people like your pictures, isn't that nice? doesn't it give you a warm glow to see your pictures on the internet, and think, "oh, they liked that, that's nice". If not, why paint them all over the city? Surely doing that is a statement to say, look at this, please look?! I'm sorry, I will continue to take pictures of your pictures whenever i see them and post them onto Flickr or my blog, merely because I like your grafitti/murals and I'd like people further afield than Sheffield to see them.
Best wishes

Having documented a fair bit of his recent work on his behalf, I have to say it's true: he does put a lot of thought into the way that they're documented & presented. All the same, I still think that once a piece of work is in the public arena, there's not much you can to do stop it from taking on a life of its own.

Quite a surprising response by a public artist! A very reasonable response if you were taking photographs of his work inside an art gallery, but rather unfair when he's painted public spaces all over Sheffield!

Hello everyone
this quote is a little out of context and actually the first time i've seen it. as i remember it, a friend told me about some dodgy looking photos of me painting a wall on London road in Sheffield at the start of 2006.
knowing that the photographer hadn't asked my permission to take the photos, he contacted me and then him on my behalf as i didn't have a Flickr account.
i'm more than happy for people to photograph my work and am of course flattered someone would set up a group - i just didn't want a stranger posting pictures of me on Flickr, which i think is fair enough.
at the time i was working on a book project, which was another reason for not wanting these specific images on the internet.
anyhow - enjoy the work.
kind regards
Kid Acne
