About Kauri (Agathis australis)

This is a collection of photographs of and relating to the beautiful Kauri tree, which can grow more than 50 meters tall, with girths of up to 18 metres. Coniferous trees with smooth bark and small oval leaves, they are native to the subtropical areas of the North Island of New Zealand, eastern Australia, and New Caledonia.

After the arrival of European settlers, the forests that once covered 1.2 million hectares were dramatically reduced. The trees were felled for timber and the gum was gathered for use in varnish manufacture. A 9105-hectare sanctuary, Waipoua, was declared in 1952; by 1987, all other kauri forests in Crown lands were brought under the protection of the Department of Conservation.
