About Kaapsehoop

High in the Drakensberg Mountains, overlooking the 'De Kaap' Valley (one of the largest extinct volcanic craters in the world) nestles the historic village of Kaapsehoop. It is the sort of place you’d miss if you didn’t know it existed.

Originally called Duiwel’s Kantoor (Devil’s office) it was renamed Kaapschehoop in the 1880’s when gold was dicovered in the stream that runs through these rocks. The valley is often covered in mist and the plateau then resembles a cape in a sea of clouds. It became known as De Kaap ('the cape'), and was named Kaapschehoop ('hope of the cape'), refering to the hopes of the gold prospectors.

With the discovery of gold Kaapschehoop boomed and during the Boer War, being in a strategic position, the British invested the town. Herds of wild horses roam the hills around Kaapsche hoop, descendants of horses left behind by the British forces.

Today the history of this magical place still lingers around every corner. This group will be a space to share your photo's of this charming village.
