About The Green Man

A leafy carved face, often seen adorning churches throughout Europe, and occasionally further afield.

Carvings, costumes, puppets and active memories of the medieval green man abound. But many of their stories and continuity has been lost to the whims of society and time. This group could be a mixture of contemporary wonder and a record of places where there are old carvings of the green man, in the hope that scholars could use them as an aid to research.

Please feel free to post short or annotated citations of books on the subject. Or just speculations and exclamations in general.

A big sorry to all of those who felt isolated by the scholastic tone of this group description! We rarely remove any photos from this group, and if you look through the vault you will see a few wonderful paintings and carvings that are emotionally centred. When I had previously written "contemporary wonder" I had very much intended to nurture a place for the vibrant growing intrusion of the green man into current culture and being. So, I am glad to see that there are more green people than just this group, but I am sad to see the interest divide between the scholastic and the creative. A garden divided against itself cannot grow? :)
