An Earth so diverse... What on Earth are we looking at when we look at
nature? Something separate from us, something removed? Or something
of which we’re a part? That is the original paradox for our species,
a question that’s been in the back of our collective mind since our
earliest ancestors climbed down from the trees and began the process
of confusing our relationship with everything else. In the last few decades
we have grownlarge enough… all of a sudden we are big enough
to kill ourselves and nature. By slowly killing the nature we are disturbing
our climate, we alter every territorial force: wind speed, evaporation,
rainfall. The world is becoming less reliable, more variable. And that will
eventually alter our perception of nature. It’s time to change our relationship
to the Earth… To do so would require understanding just how beautiful
the Earth still is, how gorgeous it remains even in its defaced state.

Uma Terra tão diversa... O que olhamos na Terra quando nós olhamos para a
natureza? Algo que nos separa de nós mesmos, algo que foi removido? Ou
algo do que nós somos uma parte? Este é o paradoxo original para da nossa
espécie, uma questão que tem estado no fundo da nossa mente coletiva, desde
os primórdios dos nossos antepassados que desceram das árvores e
começaram o processo de confundir nosso relacionamento com tudo mais.
Nas últimas (poucas) décadas nós crescemos bastante em número…
e de repente somos suficientemente grandes em número para matar a nós
mesmos e a natureza. Por matar a natureza lentamente nós estamos
interferindo no nosso clima, nós alteramos cada força territorial: velocidade do
vento, evaporação, pancadas de chuva. O mundo torna-se menos confiável,
mais variável. E isso eventualmente alterará nossa percepção de natureza.
É tempo de mudar nosso relacionamento com a Terra… Então, para obtermos
isso, nos exigiria somente o entendimento de como a Terra ainda é bela,
como ela permanece deslumbrante, mesmo em seu estado desfigurado.

BASIC CRITERIA OF PORTFOLIO - In The Style Of National Geographic

We are seeking a blend of style and content. We hope to build a PORTFOLIO that reveals well-developed photographic styles through the use of color, technique and composition in a unique manner.

There's no "right" selection; there are many possibilities generously offered from the members of this group. We want In The Style Of National Geographic - PORTFOLIO to have a strong and consistent tone, and we hoping to achieve this.

Photographs can be as diverse as life itself but we have one basic criterion to choose the photos from over all the images at SELECTION - In The Style Of National Geographic or at random selection whenever the team of analyzers spot any exceptional image at any Flickr’s photostream. In the case of random selection only the authorized picture will be posted here otherwise it will be deleted.

ENTRIES WILL BE ANALYSED ON THE BASIS OF:

1. Creativity and photographic quality. We will consider the qualities and capabilities of each photographer’s camera; therefore it would be easier for us if EXIF data is available or if information about the camera model & lens are included so that we won’t have to go through the member’s photostream and analyze which camera was used. Use of the best cameras will not necessarily produce the best shots (taking into consideration composition and creativity), but an image must be of the best technical quality each camera can achieve, professional or not.

2. Perspective, angles and depth of field on its composition. There are textures, lines and patterns everywhere we look. We are looking for that great photo that captures the viewer’s eye.

3. A focus on one element that is intrinsically significant, beautiful or unique in the photograph. Craft matters, but great photographs have emotional power that can't be fully defined or evaluated by any formula.

4. A unique perspective when a wide-angle lens for close-ups is used to create perspective as the focus of its composition. Photographs with exaggerated proportions combined with lengthened distances using creativity in a unique manner. The use of fisheye lens is included in this item. However clarity and quality of the photo is very important.

5. A unique use of such techniques as out-of-focus (such as motion capture) or overexposure.

6. An acceptable result of manipulation such as minor burning, sharpening, dodging, cutouts and/or color correction if the photographer has used such techniques. Color and composition must be presented in a unique manner but must not appear unnatural. (It is very controversial, but today when you buy a camera you acquire image editing or correction software in the same package.)

7. If cropping is applied, the image definition as the central element of the composition must be intrinsically significant in its details. This item is applicable to macro image entries, especially for those who are using non-professional cameras. A picture should be presented in its original cropping (as you saw it from your viewfinder). If this is not possible and you must use manipulation software, we recommend the use of the shape of your camera’s standard outputting measurements (e.g., 4x6, 5x7, etc.). In all cases, the image definition must be sharp and clear.

***SQUARE SHAPE only if you are shooting with a Mamiya 6 system or Rolleiflex or Mamiyaflex or Yashica 124, etc.
ALL SQUARE or SQUARISH CROPPING WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE POOL. SORRY BUT WE WANNA ESTABLISH ITSONG’ STYLE.
Suggestions for standard rectangular shapes:
We highly recommend not exceed these measurements on your cropping!
We emphasize the photos to be presented on its original crop or full-frame.

8. A caption containing information about the location such as zoos, gardens, wilderness, city, country, specimens’ scientific names (if known) and any short, interesting context or details. Sometimes, as mentioned before, a great photograph has an emotional power that can't be fully defined or evaluated by any formula. The image stands alone and tells a story about itself. National Geographic and any kind of print publication has teams of staff from their photographic, illustration and layout divisions to compose each published image, so don’t worry, we don’t expect anyone to be a genius or to expend too much time on the keyboard typing captions. Basic info (zoos, gardens, wilderness, city, country, specimens’ scientific names "if known") or the use of tags (with the basic information) will do the job.

9. An image that combines the elements of more than one photograph presented as sequence will not be acceptable. Each individual picture will be analyzed on its own qualities. Such a combined image could be great for another group but not for PORTFOLIO-In The Style Of National Geographic, at least for now.


Now, those are the basic criteria used by our team of analyzers, so get out there. Photograph a lot or look into your archives and show us your BEST photographs. Stay true to your own goal, and especially look at the work of others here In The Style Of National Geographic - PORTFOLIO.
