About Idaho Panhandle National Forests
This group is for sharing photos taken on the Idaho Panhandle National Forests.
About the Forest:
The Idaho Panhandle National Forest was created in 1973 to administer the Coeur d'Alene, Kaniksu, and St. Joe National Forests which encompass 2.5 million acres in 3 states: Idaho, Montana, and Washington.
There are approximately 400 species of wildlife, including wolves and grizzly bear. There are 73 fish species in the many streams and lakes.
Over 11,000 miles of classified roads exist in the forest, and there are 850,000 acres of inventoried roadless lands (48 areas totaling 34% of the land base) and a portion of one wilderness, the Salmo-Priest (11,950 acres) administered by the Colville National Forest.
The Idaho Panhandle National Forest headquarters is located in Coeur d'Alene with ranger district offices in Priest River, Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint, Coeur d'Alene, Smelterville, and St. Maries.
