Photography apps on the have been instrumental in shaping the way we take and share photos in 2011. The popularity of retro Hipstamatic effects teamed with the ease of snapping pictures on the mobile devices has also meant some of the biggest news stories of the year were seen through the smartphone lens using a variety of filters.

We're creating a gallery of some of the best mobile phone photos of 2011 by looking through our Guardian archives as well as photos you've submitted to us via Flickr groups over the year. But we know you've got some gems out there which we haven't seen.

Submit a photo taken on a phone (preferable with Hipstamatic effects) which tells your biggest story of the year, or one of the biggest news events of the year - tell us about it in the caption and make sure it was taken in 2011.

We'll feature some of our favourite portfolios and pictures from the group on guardian.co.uk and maybe in other formats, e.g. our newspapers. By posting your pictures here you a) acknowledge that you have created the pictures or have permission to do so; and b) grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, free licence to publish your pictures as described. Copyright resides with you and you may reuse your pictures however you wish. You will be credited and paid if we make other uses of your pictures.
