Bulb Setting for long exposure

view profile

Hi Guys
Sorry if this has been recently answered but the latest posting I can find on the net is from Autumn last year at which point no one had been able to crack the iphone camera code to give true long exposure capability. I see several current Apps claiming "bulb" facility - any one know if these are the real deal? Or are we destined to wait ...and wait

Bulb refers to holding the shutter of a camera open for an amount of time decided by the photographer. Basically, the shutter doesn't close until the photographer decides to release the button.

The iPhone's shutter speed is set and can't be changed. Any apps that claim to have a bulb setting are using software tricks to simulate it.

The shutter speed is not set, it just doesnt go any slower than about 1/10, after that point, it just increases the ISO to compensate, I have seen shutter speeds upwards of 1/2000 in bright conditions on my phone, it has a minimum ISO of 70, I really want to be able to have at least a little manual control, I haven't tried any of these apps with a bulb capacity, has anyone downloaded it to try it out?

Slow Shutter Cam is a recent app that gives *some* level of slow shutter speed to the iPhone. It's got its flaws -- it's definitely far from perfect -- but so far, it's the best app I've found for long exposures. There are seven available shutter speeds — 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 25 seconds.

I hope this isn't considered spamming or pimpin' my blog, but it is relevant to the thread. You can read my review of the app here on my blog

Apologies for slight spamming, but I released NightCap last month - it does real long exposures, up to 1 second. It makes a massive difference to low light + night shots - you can often get a decent shot with nightcap when other apps get little more than black. It also drops the ISO level for less grain in a lot of cases, because it can open up the shutter a bit longer.

This is the first (and so far only as far as I know) app to do it - others like 'slowshutter' use a video technique where you blend lots of frames together to simulate the effect (which is great for some stuff but it's not long exposure).

What people wrote above is mostly right though - exposure is basically limited to 1/15s and apple give us developers no way to manually set it. I got around this with a bit of a hack. You can set exposure manually from 1s - 1/20s (or 1/15s on iPhone 4/3gs).

There's a few 'quirks' as a result of the way I'm setting the exposure: changing exposure manually is quite slow, focussing gets slower with longer exposures, and apple's part of the camera software has a bad habit of forcing shorter exposures if it decides the photo is over-exposed.

If anyone wants to try it out and post up their results let me know and I'll send you a code. (First rule of app store: never trust the developer's description. Sad but unfortunately there are a lot of junk apps out there!)
