After drawing, silk screening, etching and lithography were my entry into the art world as a student, and I enjoyed each discipline thoroughly. But like many others, a photography class opened up a whole new world. That, and my 'new' second-hand 35 mm SLR.
I was immediately drawn to image manipulation and began experimenting in an old fashioned darkroom. These days there may actually be people who don't know what that is, or care. It was actually a very valuable learning experience for me. Anyone want to buy an enlarger? ;-)
Soon I also began incorporating photographic images into my other media and perhaps the real artist in me was born.
I did no fine art however for the next 15 years, working as a self taught graphic designer. Then came the computer and my computer became an extension of my camera, Photoshop replacing the darkroom. Art for me has never been about method or a formula.
Experimentation brings with it the element of surprise, endless variety and immense satisfaction. It feels very much like putting a brush to canvas and watching as the layers build.
My images are of mostly commonplace things found in the world around me. Making the ordinary, extraordinary is, for me, creativity at its finest.

From ordinary Meanings –

Cathy,
I'm a sailmaker/designer as you know (which is artistic in a way) so I don't have the background to explain in Artistic jargon how your work inspires me to work harder and try different things with my efforts. I've seen most of your work from your Graphic Design (remember the great Ad you did for me?), thru some of your early photography and art from college, on thru your more recent paintings and the Art that you post to Flickr. It's diverse, creative, imaginative and aspirational. Thank you for asking my judgement on occasion and for your support of my efforts. Don't slow down now !

an imaginative, creative, and most inventive gallery. I am very familiar with the mandolin piece and its intricate design and rich colors, still delight and intrigue me. I think at the time I described it as complex, sophisticated and delicious; that applies to your layered work as a whole. you have a unique artistic view and use it well. I love that your fist work alludes to inspiration. so very appropriate.
congratulations on a most beautiful gallery, catherine.

Thanks Henry, for your kind comment and support. It has been wonderful having another "artist" in the family and one I can communicate on so many different levels with. You do some fine work and have inspired me with a number of your images. ("lighthouse" comes to mind) Keep up the good work and stay in touch.

Thank you lynne, for your generous help with this gallery. I'm not sure it would be here without you, it certainly wouldn't have taken the form that it did. Your work and support have had a major impact for me. It 's interesting you mention the mandolin, I was just returning to this gallery to remove it, now I must leave it. I admire and respect your opinion and I treasure the relationship we have had.

Hi Catherine! Such a beautiful representation of your work! I wish that I had a screen big enough to emulate a gallery wall! Your images exude with such sensitivity and respect for the everyday objects around you. You have that "6th sense" insight that is complimented by the theories of color and design. What a pleasure it is to see your work here, and congratulations!!!! : ) You so deserve this honor, Cat! ♥

The quote from Emily Dickinson summarizes perfectly your art.
It is a delight to look at each and everyone, I love the poetic subdued colours, and also the compositions.
Painterly, artistic gems.

Patricia, one of my oldest and I think dearest friends on flickr. Your encouragement along the way has been so uplifting. I am always in awe of your images which defy my ability to imitate them. They are uniquely yours, but it doesn't stop me from being influenced by you. Thank you for visiting and for making a generous comment.
