I had fun researching cool lighting affects. I had this crazy image in my head (so I stuck with it). I came across a DIYphotography thread with tips on circle lighting, adding a gel to your flash for a cool color (I used a flashlight), and a spot light.

gillian: i like it, in fact best pic of the day. Especially the color effects but the picture is dead center rule of thirds. You can blame david for that one...

GIllian, I love them... minus feeling sick from seeing a 10-level white castle. :)
David, as far as rule-of-thirds, remember, everything in our class is a guideline, or "rule"... not necessarily a law that can't be broken :) The Rule of Thirds is just one design element of many that can be used to compose the photo. For example, here Gillian has used color & contrast to differentiate her subject from the background (a warm vs. cold contrast - yellow vs blue); shadows give texture; the "patties" give a sense of repetition, and the end of the counter/table creates a real line along the bottom third line. This is exactly what I want our Fundamentals students to be doing... analyzing photo composition! Trying to find out what makes a great photo better than another. In this respect, it's great to see you analyzing, David!

This is my advertisment for Smirnoff. This bottle is different because the inside is coated with a mirror finish - a chemistry project from college. The bottle was shot inside my new DIY lightbox using my 50mm. I will post a picture of my setup later on.
