The Industrialization of Flint: A Community Dialogue
On May 12, 2011, the Flint Institute of Arts hosted a Community Dialogue for Flint-area residents and the Flickr community to discuss the impact of industrialization and respond to submitted photographs. This evening event welcomed participants to view the exhibition, enjoy light refreshments, and discuss the industrialization of Flint in an open and supportive community environment.
Edmund Lewandowski visited Flint in the 1950s and was inspired to create a mosaic tile mural titled Industrialization of Flint that can still be viewed at the Flint Institute of Arts today. The city has changed a lot during the last sixty years, but industrialization still has a presence in Flint—in the buildings, automobiles, people and families that make up the community.
What does the industrialization of Flint mean to you?
Now is your chance to be a part of the discussion! Your photograph(s) should show everyone what you think best represents the industrialization of Flint today. You could choose an interesting building or location, a family member, or a prized possession. Please include a location or short description with each photograph you submit. And also be sure to join the discussion online, adding your comments to other people’s photographs.
All photographs posted by May 1, 2011, were included in a video slideshow in the exhibition, Edmund Lewandowski: Precisionism and Beyond. The video can be seen here. These same photographs were eligible for two awards, one chosen by FIA staff and the other chosen by participants and community members.
