About Bus UK Independent Bus Companies of Taunton Deane

A photographic record of the buses belonging to independent bus operators that have served in and around the geographic area now administered by Taunton Deane Borough Council.

Please note that using District Council areas is just a convenient way of splitting up coverage the County's buses into manageable chunks. Taunton Deane Borough Council has never operated buses although many years ago Taunton Corporation operated trams.

The area is basically the towns of Taunton and Wellington, the surrounding dormitory villages such as Bishops Lydeard and Ruishton and Creech St. Michael etc. A compact and densely populated District.

The major operator is First Avon & Somerset with Stagecoach making a steadily increasing impression.

Webberbus now operates in from Bridgwater (Sedgemoor District) and is about to start a service from Minehead (West Somerset) directly competing with First.

Quantock Motor Services HQ is at Bishops Lydeard on the borders of West Somerset in which District most services operate, so there is bound to be some confusion and overlap of coverage.

Historically this was Western National territory, with Southern National also strongly represented and Devon General making occasional forays over the border.

There will need to be some careful decisions made in selecting the right Group for some pics. As a general rule only include photos of buses that are based in the area and operating a route with at least one terminus in the area, even if the photo was taken outside the area. e.g. a Taunton depot Western National bus on a Taunton to Yeovil route would be included even if photographed in Yeovil.
