About Bus UK Independent Bus Companies of South Somerset

A photographic record of the buses of independent operators that have served in and around the geographic area now administered by South Somerset District Council.

Please note that this is just a convenient way of splitting up coverage of the County's buses into manageable chunks. South Somerset Council has never operated buses itself.

South Somerset includes Yeovil, Ilminster, Ilchester, Martock, South Petherton and the surrounding area. Although it was historically Western/Southern National territory the important independents of Hutchings & Cornelius and Safeway Services, both of South Petherton plus Wakes Services of Sparkford added interest and variety.

There are other Groups serving the larger operators Tilling Group, British Electric Traction Group, National Bus Company etc.

No local authority in Somerset has operated stage carriage services in its own right - although some have operated educational and welfare buses from time to time. Any photos of such vehicles would be welcome in the appropriate area Group in this series.

By their very nature bus services cross boundaries, so sensible interpretation will need to be applied in some of the less cut and dried cases. e.g. buses on the Taunton to Yeovil route could be included even if the photoi was taken in Taunton Deane
