I love them actually. The idea is like four wheel sterring on large vehicles... more maneuverability.

i agree with the initial sentiment. 4-wheel drive may be a nice feature of your car, but it isn't necessary on these carts & just forces one to strong-arm through most of the visit. it's definitely annoying.

I love the all-wheel drive shopping carts. All the carts in Europe seem to be that type, and I am always amazed by the manueverability and shocked that America doesn't have them.

I vote for the 4-wheel steer on carts too. I personally like pushing my cart sideways down the aisles.

In IKEA you need the 4x4 carts to get in between things. Once you get used to them and how they push they are great.
You can't do the one hand push anymore, but other than that they rock!

I really like them. they're hard to adjust to, but once you do... they're so much easier to push!

The carts are on 4 castors in the US stores because, like most things found in our stores, they're shipped from the same manufacturers as those found all over Europe.

I really don't like their carts. It feels like you're pushing on air, but at the same time, it took a lot of strength, myself, to turn the cart around all the corners. It kept trying to go where it shouldn't and almost ran into a few displays.

The carts do suck. Rather than a 4 wheel drive I would compare them to a car without brakes. They make sense in small cramped aisles, like in a Trader Joe's or european discount store, but most Ikea stores have huge aisles. I think Ikea doesn't want to mess with it's uniform concept, as these carts and the complementary high tech cart sorters are the same in most every location I've ever been to.

i heart them! so smooth. the only problem is that it takes a bit more oomph to change direction... not so good when i'm only using the cart to hold up my tired self. oh, and i guess the other bad thing is that when you're trying to speed race around the first-timers (you know how they gawk at every little thing and then exclaim about the price - tell-tale signs of a virgin ikean?), it takes longer to manouever. still, i like them.
