HISTORY OF I GOT WOOD
On feb 6th 2007 : \ (aka Jack) who I'd traded with a year or so before, sent me a mystery package completely out of the blue.
It contained 27 wooden blocks.
I was stumped for ideas and when I posted a pic of it on my Flickr stream, I asked if anyone had suggestions. I had entitled the pic "I got wood" because I had! (little did I know how often I would be writing and reading "I got wood"!!!) NKDBY suggested different artists could have a go at painting a side each. It clicked with everyone and within 24hrs, 80 artists had e-mailed me to ask if they could be part of the project. Both Jack and I realized one side of a block for each artist would be an organizational nightmare. (each block to 6 different addresses and back??!?!?!) So, Jack kindly offered to make more. In a week, Jack made and sent (across the pond from Hawaii) another 125 blocks. Each perfectly uniform in shape and size. Since then I've been regularly sending out blocks across the world and being amazed by the results.
