About Ichneumons

Photographs of Ichneumon wasps. A parasitic group of the suborder Apocrita within the Order Hymenoptera. Icneumons are solitary insects laying there eggs inside another insect. The Ichneumon larvae feeding on or in the other insect which finally dies.

Ichneumons are a biological control of pests such as flies, beetles, and lepidoptera.

This group of insects are notoriously difficult to identify, there are over 2000 species in the UK many of which superficially look alike.

The main characteristics of an Ichneumon wasp is that it has long antennae with at least 16 segments, a relatively thick front forewing, and prominate pterostigmsa.
