Welcome to the first and original Newport group on flickr, established 2005.
For photos of the Uk's newest city. Newport has been around as a town for nearly a thousand years and settlements here for nearly 2,000. It's only been a city since 2002, that's what I'm getting at. Thank you Queen.
We have a castle (or the remains of one) built around 1130 (just berfore lunch) by the Earl of Gloucester. Newport owes it's (former) wealth to the docks and the River Usk, then to the steel works for a while.
Newport sits near the border between Wales and England. Newportonians have, as a result, an identity all of their own. Most residents will shout for Wales in a rugby match, but it is not really part of 'Welsh Wales'. Interestingly, Newport was only confirmed as a part of Wales in 1972. Until then we were English.
New and old photo's. We especially like old photo's.
Please - No pictures of Newport Rhode Island or any other sort of Newport. Only the Gwent version please.
