Holy crap!
Excuse my language.
This might be one minor benefit to being out of work....except I wouldn't be game to try and go take a look for fear of being told to bugger off.
Anyone else going to go take a look?

I dont think you can post straight to the thread without posting to flickr first but I could be wrong.
I so badly want to go take a look, but I am dropping in on the office that may be my new place of employment. Apparently that tends to be more important.
But maybe I will take my camera just in case I can drop by on the way home. How far down the beach is is, and what is the best way to go take a look? Its been a while since I have been to Blackies.

Interesting - looks very much like the Normandy beaches - I can see Wolverine being part of the Normandy invasion.
Interesting tidbit, the unit patches reveal that he's part of the 29th Infantry division, which landed at Omaha Beach on June 6th.

@Naomi - I think Wolverine has a huge following both in the comic book fan base and movie fans. People love to get an inside look at what a film might end up looking like. It's a wonder you haven't had an offer from a magazine or online fanzine or something. Hugh is a very popular actor too so I reckon you'll be ticking up a few more thousand on these shots!

One guy was asked to get his dog off the beach. I won't write the reply but it did involved words that start with F and C
This was the best I could do this morning.

Well I took my Canon with my big lens and nobody said anything to me...
Wonder what the problem was.
Anyway I popped back today but he was too busy to come to the crowd (bugger) but his minder came over looking for a lady who had stopped Hughe's car yesterday as he was leaving the set. She had chatted to him and then kissed him on the cheek. Well, he eventually found her and apparently Hugh wanted to have his photo taken with her so when filming is over today the minder was going to come back and get her to meet him properly. Some people have all the luck!!

hi naomi.. he said the reason they were asking people not to take photos (im presuming they mean pro photos with long zooms) was because they aready had an exclusive with one of the magazines, and they didn' t want any problems with it ( the contract) but to be honestly, i don't see the problem, it's a public beach..

Ok I have been back yet again the time with the Powershot.
Stood 200 metres north of the don't cross rope and there was some guy with a metal detector. Well Mr MM is actually part of the crew looking out for people down the beach. He put a radio up to his mouth then all of the sudden 2 security guys come toward me at a hurried pace.
I was off over the sand hills. Not sure how the photos turned out but it has been a fun day playing chicken with plastic cops

Are you serious Father Mac!! OMG!!
Maybe the key to my ability to dodge the plastic cops was having my 2 year old with me. I openly had my camera around my neck. I walked past the security guards several times to get an umbrella and food and even chatted to one with my camera in my hand. Guess they thought I would be too busy chasing Ethan to get any serious shots. Luckily for me he was very well behaved.

I totally missed this thread the first time but.... What the hell is with security guards? They don't have the write to look through photos taken on your cameras.... I would have told them where to stick it and continued with it.
Unless you were crossing some big boundary or something... I honestly would have told them to go shove it and fired off 50 shots in their face.

The beach, surf club and car park had been rented from the council so it was basically private property.
So there was a big boundary or something.
The Lake Macquarie news photographer was escorted off the beach by police.

What pissed me off Jackman was on the footy show the other week and Mat Johns said and you filmed on Newcastle beach and Jackman replied Yeh Nobbys it was.
Then went on to say it was a perfect day, it was bloody raining

If you are standing on public property you can shoot what you like even if you are shooting into private property. A case like this went before the courts in 1920s? or so about a bloke who build a platform on his property to look over the fence into the neighbours place - which just happened to be the Harold Park trots in Sydney. Google it and im suure the case will come up or try the Auslii website.

Easy to sit here and type about it without 4 big security guards standing around you, especially when the cops were on their side.
A lot of councils are now charging a licence fee by the hour to shoot in 'famous' places for commercial photography and to rangers a SLR is a commercial camera.
I think Waverly council charges around $160 an hour to shoot at Bondi and a lot of places around Brisbane you have to pay a fee.
There is a sign at Norah Head saying you can photograph the lighthouse but you can't sell the image.
As I have mentioned above it amazes me they hassle people with SLR's especially at places like the football when a lot of P&S's are now over 8mp with great zoom.

Yeah Mac. People are just naive and won't learn the basics about a camera. Over on the OCAU forums people are asking all the time weather or not they'll be able to get a given size lens into the game. Basically it's an over 200mm rule or something, so that's what the guards look for on the lenses.
Easy fix, carry a 1.4x or 2x adapter in your pocket. Those convertors are tiny. And whilst the picture quality may well be worse, you're right, many P&S cameras have up to 300mm and above focal length (35mm equivalent). I was looking at one the other day with 360mm!
Yeah it is hard when security guards etc there, I carry the photography rights page thingo in my pack usually. The one explaining about public places. Never had someone whinge to me yet bout having their photo taken, but just incase. Otherwise, how would all the great photos in the world have been taken? In a studio? I bet people like Trent Parke would think differently....

I think there might need to be an update on where and when you can shoot. This months Capture Magazine does outline the difficulty issue of photography permits in NATIONAL PARKS. All states vary. Definitions of "Professional" and "Commerical" vary and some use the term "Small Scale Photography" which is roughly defined as one photographer and one assistant and one tripod.
If it is your intention to onsell your images then you need to know the law. Unfortunately there is no "one stop shop" for this. The National Parks and Wildlife Service has a policy on filming and photography and does define a role for "amateur" photography which includes "minor commerical transactions", but the policy goes on to list subsequent activities which require a licence to be for the production of books, magazines, postcards and commercial photography of PRIVATE events (ie wedding photography).
I'm not going to say that there might just be a whole big bunch or revenue raising going on here....... but it does require some further research IF your intention is to be COMMERCIALLY active.

Just to add to the taking photos in/of/from public places - there IS one restriction. You are not allowed to take photos (from anywhere) of a person in a situation where they would have a reasonable expectation of privacy -which esentially means the bathroom or bedroom.

I can shed some light on the sports events area. Have a few friends in security management.
Luket K20D is basically correct with 200mm+ assumption.
But my 70-200mm f2.8 is on the knockback list as it has the 'potential to create images that can be sold for profit'. Tried to point out that most cameras can do this. Didnt cut it in SecurityLand.
Having an inside trader in the security business has clarified some issues his staff have been told to look out for at major sports events eg Knights home games.
1. Long white L-series lenses
2. Any lens that needs its own carry bag (eg my 300mm f2.8)
3. Anything that resembles a tripod or monopod
4. Large pro-spec SLR's
Security are aware of what they look like as they are briefed on this stuff regularly.
Hope this helps

I got denied entry to a Knights home game with a 300/2.8 and a 400D SLR.
Twas quite an interesting discussion with the security guards actually. At the end of the day, I had the potential to create images for profit, which in turns takes food off the table who shoot things like that for a living. I got angry for a little while but thought it through and figured if I were making a living off it, I wouldn't want everyone out there trying to undercut me either.
As for the Hugh Jackman thing, well, that's probably something different altogether.

@ IIenuts
I have taken my Canon 30D and 70-300 lens to many major sporting events including NRL games. They usualy feel around my camera bag, but rarely open it, and when they have, they have never refused me entry with it..."knock on wood". However, I do know of a few guys who have had their cameras refused.
I agree that if you intend to make a profit from taking shots at the games then you should apply for a press pass or go through the correct channels, but if you are only taking shots for personal use, then they need to be a little fair dinkum, the professionals have prime access on the field wth massive lenses and any eauipment they need...If they can't take a better shot than one of us amateurs in the crowd, then they shouldn't call themselves professionals ;)....I don't nkow how much work they would lose to crowd snappers even if they tried to sell their shots.
