05 Jun 07 - A lot of wisdom, knowledge and faith lies in the carvings at the front of old houses. Sometimes it is just the year the house was errected, sometimes we learn about the owner, sometimes about his beliefs. Old houses can tell us a lot.
Please refrain from adding shots of general signs and memorial plates and tombstones (including related engravings in churches). "No parking", "John Miller lived here between 1984 and 1992", "In memory of..." are not what we are looking for.

Starting centuries ago, people marked their houses with their family's markings (Hausmarke) or with a sinister, moral, religious, or humorous phrase.
This habit is well known from German houses in towns or rural areas where the inscriptions were often written above the main entrance door or over the whole width of the building.
