About Document Houghton Project (10/week)

Effective 10/28/2008, the group name changed to "Document Houghton Project".

The group's objective is to document Houghton and Houghton County in time and space and to tell a story - the story of Houghton.

Goals:
(1) Document familiar structures, like the yellow court house, and the out-of-the-way places, like the inside of the Toivola Lunch. Also it would be nice to see the odd comings and goings, like the yearly Hobo parade, the snow sculptures, and the polar bear swim.
(2) By documenting in space, we mean photographing the four corners (or more?) of Houghton county, taking pictures from unfamiliar perspectives such as the top of the D&N building, in a copper mine shaft, from the sky, in the smallest towns (blink and you miss it), a macro of your neighbor's lawn ornament, and perhaps under water.
(3) By documenting in time, it is hoped that together as a group we may document different times of day like sunrise, foggy and cloudy days, night-time, and sunshine, different seasons like the colorful autumn and the white winter with tall snowbanks, and different epochs like the newest fast food restaurant, slag piles, and remnants of the bygone era.
(4) Old pictures and postcards are very much appreciated also.
(5) And don't forget PEOPLE! Who is Houghton? It could be that Italian guy playing the spoons at the polka dance, the Michigan Tech graduate accepting her diploma, or Douglass Houghton himself!

Ask yourself:
(1) What represents Houghton to me?
(2) How do I feel when I am here?
(3) How can I document this town?
(4) What insight can I share with the people who love this town and those who will never make the long journey?
(5) With a picture or group of pictures, how do I tell the story of Houghton?

City of Houghton, Houghton Gremlins, Michigan Tech Huskies, Hancock, Portage Canal, and the rest of Houghton County.

Note: This is Houghton, Michigan, not Houghton Lake!!!!
