New Holga 120 PAN Panoramic Camera Released

view profile

holga.direct  Pro User  says:

Just released is the latest Holga Camera in the range. This is the new 120 PAN Panorama Camera. The camera uses a fixed 90mm optical lens (rather than the pinhole of the 120WPC). Other features include a panoramic viewfinder and horizon level bubble tool.

Full details can be found here: shop.holgadirect.com/products/holga-120-pan-panorama-camera

Exciting camera Rick. :D I'd love to see some examples this camera could take. Feel free to send me one of these if you would love some examples of your own to use....

Thanks guys! We'll be taking this little beauty out for a test drive in the next couple of days. Hope to have some test shots up on these forums and our own sites shortly after. We'll knock up a review too for our blog.

Thanks for the offer Wayne! If we had a dollar for every offer like that we received :-)

This is very interesting, but what's the angle of view? That's a deal breaker for me - is the angle of view wider than a "normal" holga?

Wow ! I can't wait to have one of this.

I also want hack the lens to shot on 4x5 (but I guess that it will not cover the corners of the 4x5 frame).

:-) Have you any plan for a 4x5 Holga with a 110mm lens ?

Chet, it may. Depends on how much vignetting. You'll find out once you see some examples. But I wouldn't expect any movements, and the corners are going to be really soft. Is there a hot shoe on this camera?

I use a lens on one of my 4x5 cameras that came off an old Kodak 6x9 folder. Corners have vignetting on 4x5 wide open. Full coverage when stopped down a bit. No room for movement. The image circle should be larger for 612.

It would be nice if they sold these without lenses so we could use large format lenses on them for high quality 612. THAT would be nice.

Hi all,

The official angle of view is not mentioned in the printed instructions but there is reference to the images being close to 180 degrees. We think that's a tad optimistic. Maybe there's a formula that can be applied to work out the angle considering the other known variables? lens = 90mm, film format = 6x12cm... any other information needed?

4x5 Holga sounds great in theory but we think it will be a while before that appears :-(

As for hotshoes these new 120 PAN cameras have two! Yep, two hotshoes make a nice pair (excuse the bad pun). Not sure how many folk would be using this for flash photography as we kind of figured it more for landscape/street/cityscape type work but there you go... We're sure there are some crazy photographers out there prepared to put two Nikon SB-900's on this baby :-)

There are no movements on the 120 PAN and the corners will most probably be soft.

Anyway, hope to have some real samples soon!

Cheers

A quick bounce around the internet and I found a table that showed different formats and their 35mm equivalent focal lengths. According to this table, 90mm and 6 x 12 is equivalent to 29mm in 35mm format. That's reasonably wide I suppose.

Love to see some samples soon though.

Look at this picture:

It has pins and line on top of it similar to the Holga 120PC here:

Those pins are used to line up your shots. They graphically show you the angle of view. I think they do the same thing on the PAN Panoramic. Looks to me like they have approximately the same angle of view and it's less than 180°. I'm sure someone can measure it from this pictures.

Would be cool if it was that wide. Not being an expert here or anything, but light travels in straight lines - looking at the image of the 120PAN from the top, it doesn't look like that angle of view would actually be possible. It really looks like the body of the 120WPC with extra bits attached to it. It even looks like the body has the exposure scale on the back as well.

Hmmmm.

A quick update...

We've been checking with the factory on the new Holga 120 PAN and the usage of a Shutter Release Cable. Originally (as per the instruction manual) Holga were planning to release a new shutter release cable and connector similar to the one used for older Holga 120 cameras. However it seems our questions to Holga about allowing the use of the older shutter release connector (SRS-120 kit) has prompted them to have a re-think and they are looking at a small modification which means that this kit will be able to be used with the camera...

So for now, we are holding the sale of the 120PAN until we get a confirmation from the factory...

As for the other points discussed here Holga do regularly re-use bits of previous cameras in newer models in order to save costs on production, etc which hopefully helps to keep the costs to the end customer lower... It may well be that there are parts of the 120PAN which are quite similar to the 120WPC...

Anyway, more information as and when we get it.

Cheers

Just to clarify, the shop page says it takes 6x12cm negs, for 8 shots per roll - but wouldn't that size give you 6 per roll?

I'm quite tired so might have miscalculated.

thescatteredimage  Pro User  says:

In this case it's probably like the 120WPC where you insert a mask and flick the switch on the back to show the numbers for 6x6 or 6x4.5. To get 8 shots, you'd flick the switch to show the numbers for 6x4.5. Just to clarify a little, covering 2 frames of 6x6 is going to get you more than 12cm because of the gap between frames. Does that sound right?

There might not necessarily be an interchangable mask, but switching to 6x4.5 to get 6x12 sounds about right.

holga.direct  Pro User  says:

Hi all,

We have an update on the situation. Holga have spent the last week 'refining' the design so that the camera can now be used with the older Holga shutter release set (SRS-120). So while they were doing this we had to put things on hold. Good news is that just today we have exchanged the original 120PAN cameras we had for the redesigned model. So as long as the rain holds out for tomorrow we should be able to get some shots tomorrow and then scanned and uploaded a couple of days after that.

If you can't wait then we have the cameras already up on our site :

shop.holgadirect.com/products/holga-120-pan-panorama-camera

We also have a Kit on offer which adds the shutter release and 3 rolls of 120 film (1 each of Kodak Ektar 100, Portra 400 and TMAX 100).

Also to confirm you can take 6 shots on a regular roll of 120 film. Sorry we had an error on our site previously which has now been corrected. Although the back of the camera looks suspiciously like the one from the WPC the sliding switch serves no purpose as there is no facility for interchangeable film masks in the camera. We do have a pretty definite confirmation that a 35mm film mask will be released soon hopefully making this is a nice cheap Xpan alternative (although obviously not as sharp as a Hassy)....

Anyway, let us know if you have any more questions, until then we'll work on those sample shots :-)

Cheers

@thescatteredimage

Just to clarify that the shutter release cable cannot be 'jacked in' straight into the camera as it is on the 120WPC. You'll need to use something like the SRS-120 connector & cable:

shop.holgadirect.com/products/holga-camera-shutter-releas...

Hopefully a lot of Holga photographers already have one of these lying about which is why the camera was redesigned in the last week. Holga decided that it was better not to ask their customers to have to buy too many new accessories in order to use the camera.

Cheers

@ .scribe ... I think you're right and my guessing was wrong.

However, I always use the 6x12 mask with the WPC. My images come out more 6 x 13 than anything else.

Just got the first couple of rolls back from our first outing with the 120 PAN camera. Like all Holga's it'll probably take a few rolls to figure out's the nuances but for now we'll put a few images up in the pool here...

As for the viewfinder it actually seemed to be 'fairly' close to the image we got which was a pleasant suprise!

Rick, this pool is for 120WPC photos. Please don't dilute the pool. ;) I just created a group for 120PAN where you can post your photos.

www.flickr.com/groups/1770402@N25/

Interesting results. Shame there is no native way to use a cable release with it.

Can you let us know when you have them back in stock? I'm going to place an order for one.

holga.direct  Pro User  says:

Hi Wayne, sorry about diluting the pool... We should remember that was a naughty thing to do back from swim class :-)

I'll put the images in the new group, thanks for creating that.

Yes, it's a shame that the cable release mechanism was not copied from the 120WPC. We would have thought probably like yourself that this is one camera that is going to be fairly well used for long exposures... But at least we got the factory to change their original plan which was to create a whole new cable release connector unit which would have meant yet another part that you would have to buy if you didn't already have the old Holga shutter connector...

Anyway, we have a new delivery arriving in 2 days if you were interested.

Cheers

Now I'm just thinking ..... but what about the wide angle accessory lens or even the fisheye?

I think this is going to be fun :)

I haven't used my holgas recently. Maybe this is the spark for a renewed enchantment.

Glad to hear of the revised shutter release. I've got tons of holga accecessories and would hate not to be able to use them with the new camera.

I'm even thinking about removing the glass lens from one of my other holgas and putting it on the PAN.

Yup, gonna get one of these real soon.

Theres not much tech info on Holga Direct's web site.

Anybody got any idea what the lens aperture is?

arneee  (苹果) says:

I think lens aperture is 8 in cloudy setting and 8 in sunny setting. You may have to rebuild it yourself to 11 in sunny with a little mod. That is my story of 120GN when I got it. Although now the newer Holgas seem to have this technical flaw corrected :-)

donkerdave  Pro User  says:

This is an exciting development, I shoot a lot of 612 and 617 on huge old wooden large format cameras, so a smaller lighter and considerably cheaper option to take on the beach and get wet looks great.

90mm on 612 isn't that wide, its around 80 degrees field of view, although this is lens dependent - a bit like a 28mm lens on 35mm.

This lens has got to cover a lot of film and even expensive large format lenses will struggle, so a plastic lens is going to be 'interesting' off the centre. This is made harder by the relatively large apertures, you'd never really shoot at a larger aperture than f22 in this format normally. Be interesting to see how it performs, but there may not be a quality improvement over the pin hole, but it will obviously be a lot faster and can be used hand held.
