About heroic statues

This group will display photographs of statues of mythological or historic heros.

A hero (or heroine in female) in Greek mythology and folklore, was originally a demigod. Later, hero came to refer to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self sacrifice – that is, heroism – for some greater good, originally of martial courage or excellence but extended to more general moral excellence.

Heroes have been adored and venerated at all times. Heroes in mythology, like Herakles often had close but conflicted relationships with the gods.

As of the Hellenistic period dynastic leaders such as the Ptolemies or Seleucids were proclaimed heroes. In imperial Roman times apotheosis of their emperors became customary. This tradition was carried on throughout time in numerous forms of glorifications of venerated national leaders. The era of nationalism produced an array of "national heroes". In dictatorships up to the present day there is a multitude of forms of heroic representation of leaders.

Statues ptovide an ideal form for the veneration of a hero and many statues have been created on commission thoughout history to commemorate and to glorify leading figures of the present or past. They still exist and continue to be created in multitudes of forms, ranging from small figurines to gigantic public monuments. In their changing forms they are a fascinating representation of the societies in which they were created.

So please add your best pictures of heroic statues of all times for our mutual fascination and enjoyment.

But don't forget, this is about statues, and heroic ones, which glorify their heros . Gods are no heroes nor are private persons, unless they are venerated publicly for heroic qualities.
