20 Feb 10 - I have been negligent in the group for some time since I was diagnosed, early in 2009, as suffering from Multiple Myeloma - a cancer of the bone marrow for which there is no known cure. I have been treated by the excellent Haematology dept in Ealing hospital which has resulted in marked improvements in my condition but has made substantial demands on my time, to the detriment of my Flickr activities. I hope to remedy this in the future if my improvement continues.

About heroes, and heroines the world over

REVISED RULES - 31 July 2008
Post a photo or printed short story about a hero in your life. We all have at least one. Your photo will be rejected if it is posted with no explanation of why it portrays the person as a hero.

1. The members of this group include teenagers and septuagenarians, people from many nations and some of them speak little or no English, they come from a wide variety of cultures. We want them all to enjoy viewing the photos in the group pool, so please just tell us why your subject is heroic! Help them to understand and admire your heroes. If your hero is a pop idol please remember that some of us like a different sort of music, maybe "classical" western music, Indian ragas, Chinese opera or whatever, so please help them to get your message. They, in turn, will help you with their contributions.

The photos can be of drawings, billboards, etc. not limited to actual photos of the 'heroic' subject. Any photos of trees or any other inanimate subjects are not acceptable, eg pepsi cans, grass, signposts.

2. The dictionary definition of "hero" reads: 'person of superhuman qualities, favoured by the gods, demigod. Illustrious warrior. Person admired for achievements and qualities. Chief character in a poem, play or story.'

Even the rigid definition from a dictionary includes fictional characters. These definitions get stretched and some postings include animals. That's fine if the animals have behaved like heroes, but this is not the place for everybody's lapdog or cat. The further you stretch the definitions, the more need there is for an explanation.

While we accept characters from existing public works of fiction, including books, movies and TV programmes we consider it is stretching matters to invent a character of your own, provide a story about it and then post it to the pool. Such attempts are likely to be rejected.

Personal portraits with claims that you are a demigod are unlikely to reach the pool.

3. Please don't dump irrelevant pictures here hoping that it will help your "views" totals and get you some more comments. In obvious cases the picture will be rejected by the admins; where we have doubts we will consult you and give you an opportunity to explain the significance of the photo to us and then to the general audience. We want to be fair to all and ask you to be fair to us.

4. If you have any queries please feel free to e-mail the admins (you'll find them in the list of members) who will be glad to advise you.

5. We will not accept obscene or abusive postings, racist or sexist contributions.

6. Attempts to use the group as a sales outlet will be deleted automatically.

We look forward to a chance to admire your heroes, too.
