About Help Save Bees
Welcome to our FlickR group. Help Save Bees was set-up to raise awareness of the plight facing all types of British bees; Honey bees, Bumblebees and Solitary bees and to inspire and encourage each of us to do what we can to help save one of the world's most important pollinators.
1 in 3 mouthfuls of the food we eat needs pollinating by bees. 84% of all our native flowers, plants, shrubs and trees are pollinated by Solitary bees and bumblebees.
We have half the number of bumblebees today than we had in the 1950's with 3 already having become extinct and a further 6 are on teetering on the verge of extinction. And in just the last 4 years, Honey bees have been experiencing unheard declines in their colonies, in some cases up to 80% being wiped out last winter.
Habitat loss, intensive farming practices, pesticides and climate change may all be responsible for their impact on bee numbers in recent years.
Each of us has the capability to really make a difference to help with the plight of our humble bees. Simply by taking an interest in the variety of bee species around you and sharing your photos with others on here makes a difference by raising awareness.
Finding out about and planting bee-friendly plants and cutting out the use of pesticides in your gardens, makes a difference. Contacting your local MP to gain their pledge to help bees, makes a difference.
Taking an interest, makes a difference. And that's all we can hope for.
