the moonlight. -You are learning again, Jonathan Seagull,- he said.
-Well, what happens from here? Where are we going? Is there no such
place as heaven?-
-No, Jonathan, there is no such place. Heaven is not a place, and it
is not a time. Heaven is being perfect.- He was silent for a moment. -You
are a very fast flier, aren't you?-
-I... I enjoy speed,- Jonathan said, taken aback but proud that the
Elder had noticed.
-You will begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the moment that you
touch perfect speed. And that isn't flying a thousand miles an hour, or a
million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit,
and perfection doesn't have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being
there.-

- Chiang, questo mondo non è affatto il paradiso, giusto?- L’anziano sorrise
alla luce della luna. – Stai di nuovo imparando, Gabbiano Jonathan, - disse.
- Bene, che cosa c’è dopo? Dove stiamo andando? Esiste un posto simile
al paradiso? –
- No, Jonathan, un posto del genere non c’è. Il paradiso non è un posto, e
non è un tempo. Il paradiso è essere perfetti. – Egli rimase in silenzio per un momento.
- Tu voli molto veloce, non è vero?-
- Io...Mi piace la velocità – disse Jonathan, preso in contropiede ma orgoglioso che l’anziano se ne fosse accorto.
- Comincerai a toccare il paradiso, Jonathan, nel momento in cui
toccherai la velocità perfetta. Che non vuol dire volare mille miglia all’ora, o
un milione, o volare alla velocità della luce. Perchè qualsiasi numero è un limite,
e la perfezione non ha limiti. La velocità perfetta, figlio mio, è essere lì. -
