About Hastings Pier

The Group should include all the great, shots, stories, films captured of Hastings (in Sussex, England) Pier throughout its history and into the modern era and now, through its current phase and into rebuild!!

By way of introduction : Hastings Pier was opened on August 5, 1872, by the then Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Earl of Granville. It was designed by Eugenius Birch, who also designed the West Pier, Brighton and it is often seen as an innovative design considering the technical constraints of the late-Victorian period.

In 1996 it was put up for sale, but the future of the pier was put in grave doubt as interested buyers were reluctant to invest due to the serious amount of capital needed to improve the unstable structural supports. However the pier was eventually sold and reopened under new ownership in 2002. It struggled to attract serious investment and, in July 2006, Hastings Borough Council upon discovering that part of the pier's structure was unsafe promptly closed the pier to the general public.

Since then the Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust (HPWRT) www.hpwrt.co.uk/ has been campaigning to save the Pier for the People and has been successful in persuading Hastings Borough Council to make a Compulsory Purchase Order and has begun a competition to appoint an architect to redesign it..

A major fire on 5th October is a significant set back to these plans .... but, sad though it is that it took almost total destruction of what stands on the Pier, the Hastings and those connected with the town are not prepared to give in. HPWRT has received a massive boost in support and the fight goes on.

The items posted here may feature the structure itself, views of it and from it, pieces (whether attached or detached) and activities around it or relating to it.

It would be really good to have posts of specific events and memories of times spent on, under or above this fantastic structure, of the the people who made it, managed it, ran events from and on it and who have enjoyed it.
