BACKGROUND ON THE PROJECT
Over an intense two week artist residency in July 2010, Bey made portraits of pairs of UF First-Year Florida students titled "Dawoud Bey: First-Year Florida Project." They were from diverse backgrounds with different interests, but have been brought together by the commonality of their entrance into UF as the class of 2014. Each of the portraits is accompanied by a brief text written by the students about their hopes, dreams and fears as they embark on this important transition in their lives. This installation will be on view October 5 - January 2, 2011.

The Harn wanted to encourage more participation by the community that would be visible in the galleries. This is where the interactive "Transitions" project began.
