About Haiku this Photo

"A haiku is not a poem, it is not literature: it is a hand beckoning, a door half opened, a mirror wiped clean. It is a way of returning to our nature, our cherry blossom nature, our falling leaf nature, in short, to our Buddha nature." --R.H. Blyth (Haiku Vol. I Eastern Culture)

The group was created to encourage the writing and contemplation of haiku. A haiku does not (contrary to what your teacher may have said) have to contain 17 syllables. It should be brief. As few as 4 syllables. Should be of three lines in the english language tradition, but doesn't have to be. Adherence to other traditional "rules" of haiku such as cutting words, seasonal themes, concrete imagery, natural subjects, and ambiguous or layered meanings blah blah blah... are appreciated but not a requirement by any means. Humorous Haiku are called Senryu and will be considered acceptable as long as they are created in a spirit of playfulness ( not rude or mean etc...).

Children often compose some of the most interesting and beautiful haiku, with little or no knowledge of the "rules"; because their grasp language is simple and direct, but often full of deeper significance. So feel free to include your kid's compositions too. It's easy to begin, anyone can write haiku.

SUBMIT a photo with a haiku in the description(or not) and members or the public can add their own haiku in the comments section.

There are lots of opinions about what's right and wrong in haiku composition, blah blah blah...
