About King class steam locomotives of the Great Western Railway UK
This FLICKR group is a photographic record of the magnificent King class steam railway locomotives of the Great Western Railway in the UK.
The first King class locomotive 6000 King George V was built in 1927. The Kings hauled mainline express trains from London (Paddington) to the South West, Birmingham and South Wales.
In total 30 locomotives were built and all named after monarchs. The locos were finally withdrwan from British Railways service in the mid 1960s.
The first of the class 6000 was preserved as part of the UK National Museum collection. 6000 was based at Bulmers Hereford during the 1970s and early 1980s, but ran regularly on mainline specials. Two other locos 6023 King Edward II and 6024 King Edward I were lucky to be sent to the famous Barry scrapyard were they were subsequently purchased for restoration.
6024 was restored to working order and has also worked on mainline steam specials. 6023 is presently under restoration at Didcot and is likely to be in steam by 2010 or 2011.
This group contains photos of Kings in service or working in preservation.
