Exactly. And garish HDR, children wearing silly hats, beach sunsets, tasteful b&w nudes, close-ups of people's eyes, arrangements of fruit and/or sweets ... I am very tempted to start a Flickr Clichés group, in fact!

Edit: Oh god, how could I have forgotten the flower macros? Especially the ones that also include a touch of DoF??

I suggested to Yersinia a little while ago that someone should start a group called 'Vomit at My Cuteness', but that would not cover all the favourite cliches. Has anyone mentioned the aspirational cupcakes covered in pink icing, the coloured pencils (also with a touch of DoF), the staggeringly pretentious titles for staggeringly ordinary snapshots (whatever's wrong with the Snakes on a Plane approach to naming an image?), the views of the bridges and college campuses of Merkin, Arizona at night, the . . . well, enough already!

The ones called Untitled 11-05-06 or similar are the worst. Or the ones with mini poems for titles. Or inspirational sayings.

Oops, we're quite off-topic now, aren't we? Sorry! I will add, back on topic, that my (I felt, deeply ordinary) pic of the National Portrait Gallery made it to Explore thanks to GWL. I LOVE YOU GUYS hug hug hug now where is a picture of a pretty sunset I can use to illustrate my joy ...

Yep, 'untitled' is the pits, as indeed are motivational sayings, odes on the death of a hamster and the like. Untitled actually means 'my art is so profound and complex that that I cannot debase my fake Holga picture of a bus shelter by giving it some simple descriptive tag - the viewer must contemplate it with careful gaze in order to work out its meaning for him/herself'. Well, raspberries to that.

Anyway, let's be thankful Explore didn't exist when Princess Diana died. Just imagine . . . .

Right well, here's a statistical challenge for Yersinia - can we have a graph showing the statistical correlation between emotional incontinence and bad spelling? And, heresy for some, I know, can the I Love My London Cliche group have a special corner for people who can't see the point of Banksy?
Posted 81 months ago. (permalink)

Yersinia is a group administrator Yersinia  Pro User  says:

Hmmm.

Well, the spelling would be easy to quantify, roughly. You could count the number of errors in the first hundred words or something, but I don't know if there's a scale for emotional incontinence that would be applicable online.

You come up with a scale, and a set of subjects, and I can run the regression analysis!

Hmm. I noticed with my 'numberplates' that it started off pretty well with the GWL interest, ballooned when it got on Explore, then tailed off pretty quickly. Now down to number 38, with 2,057 views, 48 comments and 71 faves.

I don't know how the algorithm works, whether it's just those three factors, or whether it includes number of groups the photo is in, number of contacts you have, etc.

I'm sure there's a random title generator out there. Together with the random testimony generator. Or perhaps it's just a form letter. "I am continually staggered by the honesty and raw, painful beauty of [insert name]'s art. [insert name] causes me to re-evaluate my preconceptions about the world around me, and blah blah blahdy blah..."

I had a quick skim-read of some discussions:

I think that notes, titles, captions , tags and sets play a part, as well as where the clicks, comments and faves are coming from. And maybe adding it to a few groups helps, but if you add it to too many, you're penalised.

I'm not sure about adding it to comment groups, because I hate commenting on photos I'm not that interested in, and then seeing them pop up in my "Comments" page every time someone adds an inane comment.

Mine are nearly all GWL shots. I've never tried playing the system.

It's quite entertaining to see how easy it is to get a really mediocre shot with a badly photoshopped kitty into the top ten, though.

One of my contacts once made it to Explore with a completly blank image... Lots of comments, favourites and notes seems to be the key. More weight seems to be given to people who aren't already in your contacts list; and a comment seems to be 'worth' more than a fav, BUT a comment and fav seems to be 'worth' more than the 'sum' of a comment and a fav from two separate users. I think what percentage of people in a group look/comment/fave might be an issue, too.
