About GT Popping

The Caranx Ignobilis (known as the Giant Trevally or more commonly shortened to GT) is a species of fish found in warm tropical waters of the Pacific & Indian oceans. They are usually found marauding fish small and large along reef drop-offs and bomboras.

The GT is the largest of the Caringidae/Jack family, reaching sizes over 200lb.

Robust and solid in appearance the GT can be recognised by a steep and blunt head profile, silver to grey/black colouration and large pectoral fins.

We target the Bluefin Trevally, bigeye trevally and GTs with Daiwa threadline reels on Shimano T-Curve 50lb class Bluewater spin rods from both the inshore and offshore game boats.

Common by-catch are red bass, narrowbarred (Spanish) mackerel and barracuda. GTs to 25kg and Bluefin Trevally to 7kg are common along the outer barrier reef. All are fantastic sport on medium tackle gear.

Bite Me holds several Fiji National line class Records for bluefin trevally and GTs on the popper.

If you wish to target the 50kg+ monster GTs that haunt the outer reef breakers, we recommend you bring your own specialised gear such as Daiwa Saltigas or Shimano Stellas. You should bring more than one outfit as you are likely to suffer breakages from these huge fish.

We advocate catch & release on all GTs and bluefin trevally other than National or World Records.
