About Dreams & Goals - Getting Things Done
Productivity guru David Allen wrote an amazing book called "Getting Things Done" (GTD) that got a lot of people thinking about goals (big and small) and how really, really accomplish those tasks in a real and healthy way.
This group is a place to share and show things you've gotten done that you are proud of. I'm hoping that my first picture will set the tone!
------------------------
Ever since I was a child I've wanted to run in a marathon. I even met and ran with the Korean Olympic Gold Medalist from the Barcelona Games. I kept his picture on my wall but I never pusued my dream because of my asthma and a lot of other reasons.
Last year, after reading GTD, I made a dream list of all the things that I wanted to get done from cleaning the living room to swimming the "escape from Alcatraz." I remembered my childhood dream of running in a marathon and picked it as one of my "high hanging fruit" projects.
In September 2006, I started a marathon training program with the Aids Marathon and raised funds for Aids Projects Los Angeles (which turned out to be a great motivating tool). The first day was a three mile run, which was more than I'd ever run in my whole life. I couldn't finish without having a bad asthma attack.
I freaked out and then I focused on the concept of breaking things down into managable steps that would take me where I needed to go. So I learned more about asthma management, read about running, showed up on weekends for the training runs, joined the YMCA (which I love) and exercised during the week as promised.
Fast forward to March 4, 2007! My group has raised over $55,000 for AIds Project Los Angeles. I am in my nerdy and rediculous spandex outfit singing along to Randy Newman's "I LOVE LA" as I head over the starting line on an amazing and beautiful run through the city I love.
I never turned into a super runner or a speedster but I crossed the finish line feeling transformed and elated. It took me 7 hours and 14 minutes! That is the picture I'm posting today.
I want to see what your dreams and projects are, big or small, so please post them!
