"Famous" Graves

view profile

angabel says:

Is there a tag for "famous" graves? Have any of you taken a shot of a "famous" grave, and if so, did you travel there to take a picture or do you have any "famous" graves in your local cemeteries?

Cody's Grave 1

I just added 3 (I'll add a fourth once it turns midnight if it lets me) pictures of Cody Holp's tombstone. As the description says, he went to my high school and died tragically in the Bluffton University bus accident. He was a few years behind me (his brother was in my grade) and I went to a very small school where you knew everyone. And if you weren't on personal terms with people, you knew what they were like. Cody was a nice guy, Prom King, star baseball player.

The saddest thing is that this plot was bought, I believe, for his grandparents, and they ended up burying their grandson there. Whenever we drive past the cemetery, 9 times out of 10, there is someone out there, either his mom or another relative or a high school student. Normally I dislike a bunch of "crap" being left on the tombstone, but it's quite touching here. Someone monitors it so it won't get thrown away, and there are even lights on his grave.

On another sad note, 5 students/former students were killed from my high school in this past school year. When you go to a high school with less than 100 kids per grade level, that's a tremendous loss, and so they all have greatly affected the students there.

On a completely different note, I also have some photos of "famous" administrators and Miami University professors, but they're really only famous concerning the school, and not from a tragic accident like Cody's grave unfortunately was.

A couple of famous graves that I deliberately went to:
Karl Marx's tomb IMG_0846 Harding Tomb

and a famous non-grave:
Richard III IMG_0958
(famous because no one is really sure where the king commemorated here was buried, if indeed he was buried properly at all --one story is that his body was just thrown into the local river.)

This is one where the mode of burial is more famous than the actual person.

Things are not always only what they seem...

Sandra West's burial made news stories all across the nation as she was buried in her favorite negligee seated at the wheel of her 1964 powder blue Ferrari convertible, with the seat "suitably reclined"!

I have a problem with the way they market Samuel Adams beer. On the carton, you know how it says "Brewer" and "Patriot"? He never played for either team.

What I love is how elaborate graves of the then-famous get erected, and then they fall into the dustbin of history. Green-Wood Cemetery (Brooklyn) has plenty.

This is a great thread... and for those interested, I came across a book at Barnes and Noble the other night (I just looked over and saw it -funny enough) that reminded me of this discussion. It was in the reference section, among the books with 'Facts Everyone Should Know' and stuff, and the book was about where famous peole are buried and exactly how they died -it may have even been called "Where They Are Buried" or something like that.
