Grunge art is a term used recently for art that looks old, torn, dirty, messy, and generally the opposite of elegant - more like the scratch paper the artist uses beneath the painting as it is being created. With highly personal symbolism and iconography, grunge art often takes on the look of trash as if perhaps the paint palette accidentally turned over on the painting. Error after error, the piece takes on a look of disarray, thumbing it's nose at neatness and order.
