About GRID Cities Workshop Barcelona

Grid cities are a global design phenomenon we see manifest in local ways. They also have universal appeal for their planned simplicity and ease of access to the resident and visitor alike.

Deconstructing, observing and recording the surfaces of a grid city allows the history of layers and textures to guide us on a photographic journey through time, using the design of the grid structure as the thread linking the images together.

The workshop ‘Grid Cities’ explores the design of Ildefons Cerdà - the L’Eixample, and empirically compares and contrasts the grid design with the medieval Ciudad Vella of Barcelona through photographic practice.

The participants of the workshop will have the opportunity to practice and explore the methodology of multi exposure by shooting and combining façades, textures and grids, and by following their own interests and observations that reveal themselves in the city of Barcelona.

The workshop has three parts; day one a discussion developing an understanding of the theory of grid based cities, and a discussion of the artist’s working methods; day two a practical day where students work under the supervision of John Frederick Anderson photographing the two areas of the city of Barcelona; and the third part, a presentation day where students and John Frederick Anderson present their work and experiences of the city through the discussion of images and outcomes of each other’s work.
