About grid

The grid was the conceptual tool of Renaissance artists representing an abstract model of the universe. Modern art used the grid to explore both the real and what is beyond the real. From De Stijl to Minimalism, Pop to Fluxus—Piet Mondrian to Marcel Duchamp, Eva Hesse to John Cage—the utilization of the linear horizontal and vertical elements of the grid has housed the inherent structures that lie behind both the spiritual and material world—at least conceptually speaking.

The grid conveys the modularity of time—it is found in film frames, television—it rests on top of the chessboard, is the tiled floor of numerous bathrooms, and is present in the gridlock of cars in rush hour traffic. That being said, the purpose of this group is to explore expressive possibilities of the grid through a multitude of mediums.
