About The Greasy Spoon

Ah! This has been instigated in some haste, but nevertheless we'll give it a go.

When the rest of the world refers to a café, a scene from 'Friends' may pass through their minds. Or they might imagine sitting on a boulevard, little finger raised as they sip their coffee, pausing occasionally to delicately wipe away crumbs from this morning's pastry.

They say they are watching the world go by. Or thinking lofty thoughts. If they're French ;-).

Pah!

This group is dedicated to one of the great, much neglected, Great British Institutions - the Greasy Spoon - where neurotic coffee (er…and health) connoisseurs fear to tread.

These are the places to feed your hangover. These are the spots for pre-match sustenance. It is the world of lorry and cab drivers, market people, students and the ravenously hungry. Greasy spoons are to be found everywhere. Praise the Lord.

No latte with a cinnamon twist here, matey. No remortgage required for a hot drink! Just follow the sublime and addictive smell of frying bacon.

Some greasy spoons are very good. Some are very bad. Most are certainly very ugly. Innit? ALL deserve to be photographed before some EU tosser bureaucrats them out of existence.

Our Task

We will go forth and record as many of these establishments as we can in all their ragged glory.

We may photograph interiors and exteriors and note the location, please.

We may observe (and snap) the proprietor and his staff, mingle with (and snap) the clientele - if they appear house trained. We will certainly wonder how anyone can eat liver, onions, chips, egg, beans and sausage at 8am. With gravy. Then follow it with rhubarb crumble and custard. (I have witnessed this with mine own eyes…!)

We will record a world of all day breakfasts (bacon, eggs, beans, black pudding, toast and possibly chips); we will celebrate bubble and squeak, and we will marvel at 'All Day Specials.'

Important issues like which sauce is provided with the all day breakfast (and surely it MUST be HP??) must not be neglected.

Marks out of 10 may be awarded (not essential) for..…..whatever you like really.
