About The Goyt Valley UK

All aspects of the River Goyt and its valley.

The source of the River Goyt is amid the peat of the Cheshire moors near the Cat & Fiddle Public House on the A537. It then flows down moorland valleys, through reservoirs and urban areas such as Whaley Bridge, New Mills, Marple and Romiley before it is joined by the River Tame near the shops of Stockport to become the River Mersey. The 1842 Ordnance Survey has the river changing its name to Mersey well before the confluence with the Tame so I guess the Goyt is the true source of the Mersey.
The Goyt is joined by many streams and rivers such as the Etherow. Its catchment includes many man-made features such as mines, quarries, limekilns, mills even once a gunpowder factory. It is criss-crossed by pack-horse routes, roads, railways and canals and is the haunt of hikers, ornithologists, historians and photographers. This group is for those who have a soft spot for this river, its valley and all that happens there.
