About Gowanus Canal

The intention of this group is to provide an outlet for the small number of photographers, artist, and explorers who have discovered the Gowanus Canal as a subject to share their visions and intrests with one and other.

The Gowanus Canal was once an artery for industry. This is still recognizable through it's derelict barges, polluted waters, and working scrapyards and drawbridges. At the mouth of the canal the tide brings in jellyfish and garbage. At the other end water pumped from the East River provides raw sewage and a constant flow of oil. Unbelievably, the Gowanus Canal has become a sort of urban wildlife habitat. In the spring this overly polluted estuary floods with thousands upon thousands of tiny fish which in turn attract crabs, bigger fish, and migratory birds.
