About Glenveagh National Park

photographs and images from the Glenveagh National Park, Donegal.

i was surprised there was no group dedicated to this beautiful place....hahaha, until now....so here it is.

Feel free to join and add your images.....But from WITHIN the park itself please.

The estate of Glenveagh was created in 1857-9 by the purchase of several smaller holdings by Captain John George Adair ( 1821 - 1885 ), a wealthy land speculator from Co. Laois [ and described as ' a cunning, ruthless land speculator who trampled on the rights of everyone in the pursuit of financial gain. ' ]. He was to later incur infamy throughout Donegal and Ireland by ruthlessly using a trumped up charge as an excuse to evict some 244 of his tenants in the Derryveagh Evictions of 1861, allegedly so they would not spoil his view of the landscape. His cruelty is remembered in the following verses by an anonymous poet -

" CRUEL JOHN ADAIR

He brought the sheriff to our doors
He quenched our fires so bright
My grandsire is no more
He died that fatal night
My mother weeps, her youngest child,
A boy of beauty rare
But four months old, so meek and mild,
Done in by John Adair.

For many a year our weary race
Have tilled the mountainside
Have worked old Glenveagh’s rugged face
Have steamed the Atlantic wide
Full fifty homes he has levelled all
And wild sighs fill the air
Full fifty thousand curses fall
On cruel John Adair. "

Thanks to Geoff for the description and poem.
