Giresun - Turkey
+ birth place of the cherry and the capital of hazel-nut!
Giresun, which is in Eastern Black Sea Region, is founded on a peninsula. Giresun, is one of the pearl like cities of Black Sea where green and blue are hug together at northern east of Anatolia. Virgin forests, plateaus and rivers of Giresun, which are very appropriate to tourism in connection with natural and historic values, are very attractive.
In the 2nd century BC, the Roman general Lucullus, who came to the ancient Cerasos, saw a delicious fruit here, and carried its trees back to his country. It was there then that the cherry (Kerasus) giving Giresun its name, spread all over the world.
Giresun, clinging to the slopes of mountains spilling down into the Black Sea, is famous as the birthplace of the cherry.
Jason and his Argonauts sailed past on their way east to fabled Colchis (Georgia) in search of the Golden Fleece, but it was local traders who shipped the first cherries out in Roman times. Cherries are still an important local crop, along with hazelnuts (filberts) and tobacco.
