Workaround for Flickr's new home page

view profile

Hairlover says:

NOTE: Firefox users may want to consider a better option below:

Flickr members have posted more than 7,000 comments concerning the new launch page. Almost all of these have been negative. The most common complaint is the mingling together of two comment streams:

(1) activity on your photostream
(2) comments that you've made
Here is a fairly good work-around, but, of course, it will not be as readily accessible as it had been previously.

You may want to copy the following code string below (between the lines, but without the lines!) and then paste it into your profile. It will allow you to access directly and separately the activity on your photostream and the comments you've made, as well as the recent activity in your groups.

You can use CTRL-C to copy and CTRL-V to paste into your profile. You can also paste this into a comment on one of your photos, if you wish.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<a href="http://flickr.com/activity/?activity_with=recv_omment,recv_fave,recv_note,recv_tag">Comments on your Photostream</a> || <a href="http://flickr.com/activity/?activity_with=recv_reply">Comments you've made</a> || <a href="http://www.flickr.com/recent.gne">Recent Group activity</a>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When pasted into your profile, you will see this:

Comments on your Photostream || Comments you've made || Recent Group activity

A BETTER WAY FOR FIREFOX USERS:

A much easier and quicker way around this problem:

If you have Firefox, you will need to add this Greasemonkey add-on, if you don't already have it. Click on the green button, "Add to Firefox". Close your browser. Reopen and return to this thread.

Then go this site and click on "Install this script."

Close your browser. Then re-open your browser and go to Flickr. When you do, you will find that your "Recent Activity" tab now has three links "mine", "others" and "both." The first two will behave like the old Flickr home page. The last is the same as the one Flickr has now.

Click here for more information.

To access the user script to edit or uninstall, follow this path:

Hey Wes - thanks for this info... I'm truly fed up with what Flickr have done regarding this exact issue!

Can you tell me if this works on Safari too for Mac users?

Thanks

You're welcome, Laura!

As far as I know, these Greasemonkey scripts work only on Firefox. I haven't attempted to add them to my other browsers, but I'm quite certain it wouldn't work.

I have Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera, in addition. I much prefer Firefox because of the way it organizes the source code and greatly simplifies the process of locating the URL of any image on any page.

It has been my experience that Firefox is simply the most versatile.

As for Mac, you're entirely on your own. Sorry I can't help you there.

BTW, if any of your browsers happen to stop working unexpectedly, check to see if a recent update triggered your firewall. If so, simply reconfigure the firewall, and that should solve the problem.

It really isn't that hard to fix things right on your home page. When you click on "more recent activity", your options appear in a box on the right hand side of the page. I just unchecked all the boxes that didn't deal with my photos for my default setting. If you want to switch to comments you made, all you have to do is check that box and it automatically changes. (without having to change your default) Go back when you're done by unclicking that box.

Thanks for your solution, Wes. Some may find it more to their liking.

I tried using the options box, but it turned out that I was doing an extraordinary amount of clicking. Using the GM script, I can switch from one stream to the other with a single mouse click, just like it was before the change.

Thanks for the link! I had a Greasemonkey script installed that would reset comments & activity in group discussions. When you'd double click on the NEW button it would disappear until new comments or discussion replies were added. That was my favorite script because I could tell right away if there was something new to look at. If you come across an updated script like that, please post the link.

I probably should have mentioned this: When you install the GM script, you may see a small smiley face on your status bar. If this is illuminated (yellow), your GM add-on is working. Clicking on it will toggle it off, disabling the GM script and graying out the icon.

THANK YOU so much for the script! It works great! I hate the new launch page layout and it annoys me to no end to have to go to the "recent activity" and tick/untick things...

You're welcome, Beatriz. Glad I could help. I've received several replies from people who see nothing wrong with checking and clearing boxes to view their two activity streams. I think it's tedious and unnecessary. The GM script restores the operation to its original format; one click to see either stream.
