Thank you flatfield, I finally learned from you the "flip image" trick, which is what is needed to get rid of the evil seam that you'll have otherwise. Check out the chrome droplet I made with your method;

Flatfield, do you have any guess what the red circle was made from?
(hint look back in my photo stream a few pages and you'll see the object).

Flatfield, no it's kind of neat. You just need the right caption for it.
Something like,
"floating warp gate"
or
"sky hook"

Hello Guys, My small contribution to this topic:

Another one's Here
P.S: I'm kinda junky now, totally addicted to this! Here's another one again: Clic
PPS: It may not be a bad idea to blur the edge of the final circle, since the polar coord deformation makes it very very sharp, and maybe too much "pixeled".

From looking at these pictures, most reading this already know this trick.
To have a square selection centered on a point of a picture do this:
left click, control, shift, (in that exact order) drag for selection box, release left button, and keyboard keys.
One I just made doing this.

Hey, those are a lot of fun to make. Thank you for posting the gimp tutorial. Big gimp fan (well open source in general) here. Already made a couple and trying to make some frames to make animations with them :-D

This is cool. You can even skip the step to flip the image if you toggle the "map from top" button in the two Polar Coords steps. This is what I got (with smoothed edges):

In The GIMP you don't need to make a square selection. If you follow Flatfield's instructions (apart from that one) and make sure that the "Circle Depth in Percent" parameter is set to 100 (the default) all the way through, you can use a rectangular image. You can use the "Offset Angle" slider to position the picture the way you want it and can even come up with something where the original photo is still recognisable...

This gives a result which I think is surreal rather than abstract.
You can also muck about with the "Circle Depth in Percent" parameter. This one was from a square selection (it would have been elongated otherwise) with "Circle Depth in Percent" set to 50 throughout.

This second image definitely falls within the "abstract" category rather than surreal.

Here is another approach:
1) Select Filter->Distort->Polar Coords....
2) Switch checkboxes to 'Map Backwards': off, 'Map from top': off, 'To Polar' off.
3) Select the polar coords again, as in step 1.
4) set the checkboxes to 'Map Backwards' is still off, and 'Map from top': on, 'To Polar' on.
This way you don't have to do the step of flipping the layer vertically.

@redraven: Does it give the same results? If so then I can change the script.

@tuxcomputers: What redraven_info suggests gives similar results though they might not be exactly the same. It's along the same lines as choosing whether to flip a picture or rotate it through 180º instead.

I tried both Amazing circle technique's last night and found there was a very slight difference.
I have updated the script to use the second method that does not require the flipping and so that it checks to see if the image is already a square. The previous script would have a divide by zero error if it was.
The new script is here.

This is really cool. I had no idea that there was so much GIMP going on here at Flickr.
"1a) Copy the square selection, and chose Edit : Paste as New to make this selection into a new image."
<Image>/Layer/Transparency/Add Alpha Channel
or
<Layers>/Add Alpha Channel
should fix the problem with the background color getting into the polar mapping....

Yeah I know it is because after I made that comment I went and made it compatible, it wasn't though.
I have also updated the script, I have learnt quite alot about scheme/Script-fu since then and cleaned up the code in all of my scripts to make them more robust. The last update for this script was the 7th August and you can get version 1.4 here.
I have also written up a tutorial on scripting here, it's true, if you want to know a subject better teach it to someone else.

I appreciate that such a fantastic program is available at all and am just trying to give something back. I can't write code to save my life but I can understand how programmers think and translate that into "normal" speak.

Some of these are very cool! Thanks for bumping, marijasmnj, and thanks for the technique, Flatfield!
Here's mine. :)
From this pic:

I got three:
1st attempt (using the straight technique):

Second attempt (using a variation where I did the first polar coordinates twice, once with "map from top" on, and once with "map from top" off, then flipped and did the final polar coordinates):

Third attempt (using a variation where, if memory serves, I did polar coordinates with "map from top" on, flipped vertically, did polar coordinates with "map from top" off, flipped vertically again, then did the final polar coordinates):

This is fun! :D
