How do people cope when they have no home to go home to?

How do the homeless create a private space of their own within a public space they cannot own?

A Flickr group that explores the reality of homelessness and subsistence survival in the modern world.

Squatters, urban nomads, hobos, run-aways, gypsies, street vendors and drop-outs are people too. The worst thing we can do is pretend they don't exist. They live among us; it's time we acknowledged it.

Give us images of improvised shelter, anywhere and in any way you find it. Remember: Some personal spaces don't have walls! An especially thick coat creates a personal space. A carefully placed shopping cart creates space while one sleeps. These are all forms of place-making.

Do Take pictures from a distance. If you are going to enter what might be another's private space, make sure they have vacated and moved-on before you do. Don't invade the private spaces of others.

Don't do anything foolish, especially if you're alone.

Do post photographs of the homeless in a way that captures their humanity, preferably within their personal spaces. Don't post any photos which rob the homeless of their dignity. The golden rule applies... treat them with respect at all times.

Do post pictures of homeless campers who live that way out of necessity. Don't post photographs of recreational campers who go home at the end of the weekend.
