What is Gevgelija?
Gevgelija is a town with a population of 15,685, located in the very southeast of the Republic of Macedonia, along the banks of the Vardar River. It's situated at the country's main border with Greece.
Why is it special?
It's considered that Gevgelija is one of the warmest cities in Europe. Mountain Kozhuv and other smaller mountains surrounding the city are stopping the cold winds from the north and because there is no mountains on south all the way to the Eagean Sea where the warm winds are passing. The temperature at the city is very high at the summers, sometimes it can reach to 45 degrees Celsius.
What else is it known for?
It's widely accepted as the town with the best climate in the entire region, suitable for the cultivation of fruits and vegetables such as figs, lemons, and grapes. The town is also a center for raising silkworms. It is also the point which links the motorway and railway from Skopje and three other former Yugoslav capitals (Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana) with Thessaloniki.
