About Central Cascades Geotourism Project

Welcome to the Central Cascades Geotourism Project Group on Flickr!

This group is moderated by the ExperienceWA.comTeam, who currently has a Flickr group for submitting photos for consideration on the official Washington State Tourism website, ExperienceWA.com. As we have done with the ExperienceWA group, photos in this group will be considered for licensed for the upcoming Central Cascades Geotourism website, which is currently in development. While this is a project with the Washington State Tourism office, please know that this is not affiliated with ExperienceWA.com.

Thank you for visiting this group and your interest in geotourism in the great Pacific Northwest.

What is the Central Cascades Geotourism Project?

A regional Advisory Committee and Stewardship Council are working in cooperation with the National Geographic Society (NGS) to create a Central Cascades Geotourism MapGuide as part of the Society’s ongoing program to promote “geotourism,” defined as: “tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents.”

In support of this effort, the region’s residents, community organizations, and tourism stakeholders have the opportunity to nominate sites for potential inclusion in the MapGuide and/or related interactive website. Both are designed to promote natural and cultural attractions as well as encourage a sense of pride in local communities. The project addresses the need to preserve the region’s shrinking cultural and environmental assets and to revitalize small, rural communities through diverse economic development strategies.

You may learn more about the nomination process by downloading the Draft Central Cascades Geotourism MapGuide and Nomination Guidelines and Draft Central Cascades Geotourism MapGuide
Nomination Form
.

The Central Cascades Geotourism Project involves a number of players helping to initiate the project with more to come on board as the Stewardship Council is developed:
Travel Oregon
Washington State Tourism
Sustainable Travel International
Rural Development Initiatives
Sustainable Northwest
US Forest Service
Bureau of Land Management

The Central Cascades Geotourism Project should also include YOU!

As an area resident, photographer and expert, we are looking for your photos of potentially nominated sites and area locations to license for the MapGuide and interactive website. This group will act as a repository of photos under consideration for the Central Cascades Geotourism Project.

If your photo is chosen for the MapGuide and/or the interactive website, a group admin will contact you directly to discuss licensing and negotiate a licensing agreement. If you are currently working with the Washington State Tourism's ExperienceWA.com group on Flickr, the licensing process will be very similar, however we have yet to determine final requirements for licensing as of 1/08/09.

Any questions, please contact brandi @ everyoneweknow.com for any inquiries about this project.
